<p>Yes, take the lessons as a course. That's the way to go. My D is in an ensemble and lots of kids do that. If you're planning on taking lessons anyway, why not? After three terms, you get credit for one course. The music lessons are not the equivalent of a 4th course in terms of work load (especially if you'd be taking lessons anyways and the for credit lessons don't count towards your limit for taking 4 courses in a term- which I think you're only allowed to do 3 times.</p>

<p>There are auditions for most instruments to get into the program. ... the violin lessons are somewhat competitive to get into, but nearly so much as the piano lessons.</p>
<p>However, most of the profs are very encouraging, and chances are you'll get a spot sometime during the year if you are persistent, as some of their upperclassmen take off terms, decide to stop taking lessons, etc.</p>
