courses @ barnard?

questions questions questions.

how often do students take courses in, say, the french department at barnard?

is it difficult for columbia students to register for them?

is a language course like elementary french II basically the same at both schools?

merci beaucoup.

I don't think there are statistics available on how often Columbia students take Barnard classes, but registering for them is as easy as registering for Columbia classes- it's the same procedure online. And, checking the Directory of Classes, there is Elementary French II available at Barnard spring semesters (whereas you can take it both during fall and spring at Columbia).

thanks columbia2007. what's the quality of the foreign language courses there compared to their equivalents at columbia? i may have to take french at barnard instead of columbia this semester, but it's tough not having a culpa.info for the profs over there...

They're fairly equivalent. At the elementary level most instruction at Columbia is done by grad students or "lecturers," a sort of sub-professorial faculty position. At Barnard, all the language faculty are lecturers. This doesn't necessarily guarantee higher quality instruction at Barnard though; I've had lecturers at Columbia far worse than some of the grad student instructors, who were a far more motivated, intellectual bunch. I would CULPA Brian O'Keefe, a Barnard French lecturer who seems to do most of the elementary language instruction "across the street". He seems to have garnered reasonably good reviews.

I assume you mean to say that the language faculty teaching the elementary/intermediate level language courses lecturers -- as Barnard definitely does have full professors in their language departments. (But probably teaching more advanced literature courses, not basic conversational & composition classes)

Yes, that is what I meant.

There actually are some data on that:

if you're interested. (from http://www.barnard.edu/opir/default.htm)

But yeah, eyne, culpa also includes Barnard profs.
