Same in Texas.
I was told the pharmacies donāt care what DOB you enter as long as person is eligible at time of shot.
We have a drive up vaccine site a mile from my house. I think Iām going to just take 12 year old up there Thursday after school. If that fails, I have backup appt further away on Friday.
Among my social and professional group, everyone is planning shots for their 12-15 year olds ASAP.
I know CDC is meeting today; if they (presumably) approve, then 12-15 year olds will be federally eligible. But my local news is saying we have to wait for state approval, which hopefully will come Thursday. Anyone else know if there is any other cause for delay?
With Walgreens, you have to set up an account in order to make an appointment. I set the account up with my sonās real birthday, so the system blocks him. I also think they might not honor an appointment made under a false birthday.
Our local pharmacist told me he would absolutely make an appointment for us, except for that he was only given Moderna. The doctors offices, even pediatricians, in our area have Moderna or J&J, if they have any vaccine.
Iād be happy for my son to get either of those vaccines, but they arenāt approved for under 18. I just had it in my head that we would be able to make appointments yesterday, so I have to reset and be patient!
The CDC only issues guidelines. They are recommendations and not enforceable.
The CDCās Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is supposed to vote on whether they will recommend the Pfizer vaccine be given to 12-15 year olds today at 2:45. Hereās there agenda: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/meetings/downloads/agenda-archive/agenda-2021-05-12-508.pdf
Iām just hoping our governor is not going to micromanage this in order to reward loyal healthcare CEOās and get photo ops. Just get vaccines in arms.
Edited: vote is at 2:45
Here in San Diego they are making appointments at some vaccine sites beginning next week for the 12-15 age group.
On the subject of masks, can anyone explain this? It was posted by an MIT scientist on twitter who was previously a mask and lockdown supporter but has since changed his mind after seeing the dataā¦Regardless of mask mandates, cases are dropping. Deaths also have a similar pattern. IMO vaccinations are a big reason for the decline, but that still doesnāt explain this mask data.
How aboutā¦lots more people vaccinated in the last three months as an explanation.
This graph also doesnāt tell how many folks continue to wear masks despite a lifted order to do so.
Maybe you didnāt see this, @thumper1?
Anecdotally, lots of people here have been commenting about the lack of masks seen in places like Florida and Tennessee where mandates have been lifted so Iām not sure your theory holds water but thanks for the attempt to explain the data.
And FWIW - I am personally for a slow relaxation of mask mandates, covid restrictions, etc. as the data shows numbers are significantly decreasing. How many of those 34 states are doing that? I know VA is. If numbers are trending upwards, it makes sense to keep the mandates in place. It is also possible that those with increasing numbers have most of the highly contagious floating about. I would expect these to be more on the coasts with the international airports.
It also should be noted that the difference in the 2 lines in mid/late April is only ~8 cases/100K people. Thatās 0.01% of the population. I personally would take closer notice if the difference were more like 100 cases/100K people vs 20. A few states with a large outbreak of variants could skew the data.
Testing availability dropped off precipitously in some of those states that lifted mask mandates. You test less, you see fewer cases.
I just checked Worldometers. FL still tops the list for most new cases yesterday.
In PA we havenāt dropped the mask mandate and weāre #4 in new cases (per capita for that date we would be higher than FL), but where I live several people have stopped wearing masks on their own and stores donāt challenge them at all. Masks donāt help when they arenāt worn.
Iām thankful vaccines are bringing the numbers down. We certainly canāt count on people doing it (or Covid would have never been a thing as it could have been stopped way back when if everyone had taken it seriously).
Testing availability or less testing, period? Less testing could be a valid reason for the drop off but seasonality may be a more viable explanation.
Iām in the camp of a virus is going to virus regardless of manās attempts to control it. Iām also thankful vaccines are bringing the number down. Praying we get to 70% of US adults vaccinated by summer.
There is a part of my thinking that agrees with the virus is going to virus. Places that have been successful could have just been luck. But, when Covid is there- like schools in GA or summer camps, if you are not wearing masks, the spread will be much more than if you are. Our schools have had Covid cases, but very little spread inside school. We follow and participate in Dukeās ABC collaborative, and they are pointing to masks as the number one thing to keep the spread from happening.
Iāve been super cautious this last year and I live in Oregon where weāve had mask mandates and among the stricter regulations. For a year we were in the bottom few states for cases consistently, then all of a sudden this spring we had a spike while many other states were declining. Turns out half of the cases were B.1.1.7. The thought is that the little bit of greater transmissibility along with a population that had less previous infection was just enough to get past our ānormalā efforts to prevent it. Iām in favor of masks, handwashing, and staying out of crowds (no flu! no colds!) but I do think that thereās a lot we still donāt know and canāt control and lumping various areas together messes up the data. I look forward to all the future studies trying to drill down on just how COVID-19 spread. Until then we do what we can to keep each other safer.
Vaccine approved by CDC advisory group for 12-15 year olds . CVS and other places taking appointments for tomorrow.
Lumen field in Seattle allows walk-ins of 12to 15 yo today. Accompanied by parents of course. Today is a slow day, only expected 1400 but it will be 8,000 Saturday. They are recruiting pediatric doctors as vaccinators.
CVS is taking appointments in NY, but the New York State sites and Walgreens still say that 12-15 are ineligible.
We have a CVS appointment, but itās 45 minutes away. I drove that distance for me and for my D21, but I really thought that with the abundance of vaccines in our area now, we wouldnāt have to do that. Maybe closer appointments will open tomorrow!
UW Medicine said they will start taking appointments tomorrow. They also do walk in at 4 public health sites: their own at mont lake, NW, Harborview and north king county. I think everything will be open for 12-15 starting tomorrow.
Colorado said theyāll do about 1400 vaccines on Thur and Fri for 12-15 year olds, but then are having a clinic for 8000 on Saturday and as many as they can after that. There were a few clinics in schools when 16-18 yr olds were eligible (on weekends, with parents of course).
Iām sure theyāll be clinics all over the state, but this is the vaccine that has to be super cold, so they are really limited to the places that have freezers. I wish the J&J would expand its age groups.
