I’m a coxswain who wants to go to Brown. Brown is my dream school and it has been for years. I have major achievements in coxing such as (Gold at Club Nationals, Youth Nationals, and Canadian Henley.) The only problem is my only EC at the moment is rowing. Will Brown look at me for coxing or should I join more ECs to grab their attention?
Any suggestions or opinions will help! (btw I have a passion for physics and biology, as well as engineering, should I join clubs based on them?)
Have you been in contact with the coach at Brown? Are you looking at being a recruited athlete? I would certainly suggest that you have something on your resume besides rowing, but just joining a club doesn’t really show much besides the fact that you can join a club. You need some kind of leadership position, community service, working, research, etc.
As you may know, colleges generally expect coxes to have excellent grades, but if you have those, a compelling interest in Brown, and a fistful of gold medals from top regattas, I’m not sure how much else you would need in terms of clubs or activities.
But there’s no need to guess - you should reach out to the coaches yourself. Graham Willoughby manages their recruiting. He’s a straight shooter, and a really good guy. Just make sure you explain your interest in Brown, and in science and engineering, in addition to coxing. He’ll level with you about their coxes, and their process generally.
