Does anyone know where we can get cheap (but new) CPUs? I don't need the screen or keyboard or anything like that...It doesn't have to be extra nice...just something that is doable. thanks

Why don't you
take your old CPU
to the same store you bought it from
and trade it in for a nicer model
and pay a little more money

?

For the record, a CPU is just the processor. It means "central processing unit."

Not that it matters, but you are referring to the PC as a whole, I assume, based on your post as a whole.

That said, there are a couple of good routes to follow in getting a fair-priced PC:

Dell- I've owned several Dells now, and I have to say that I'm impressed overall with their service and quality. If you are patient, and you watch the Dell website like a hawk, you stand a good chance of getting a great deal on a computer. Just type in "dell coupons" into Google and look for new e-coupons every day. Once in a while, something great like, "20% off" pops up, and voila!, you have a brand new Dell for next to nothing.

Build your own- This is not as hard as you think, but it carries no warranties. Although there is an incredible amount of personalization and self-satisfaction that accompanies this option, most people should go with a "warranty included" option.

Buy used off eBay- I've also purchased used, functional, healthy computers off eBay. The only caveat- warranty lifetimes may be brief, if not over. Dell will transfer warranties, by the way.

By CPU, do you mean the Intel or AMD processor that came with your motherboard?

By saying that you don't need a keyboard or monitor seems to indicate that you're looking to get a new desktop computer (the box itself rather than with the keyboard/monitor/mouse/speakers that come with a complete system).

Depending on the age and speed of your present computer, it may be cheaper to buy a complete system. If you have technically adept friends, they could build you a new system to your specifications...

If you're thinking of replacing your CPU chip, you'll need to know the model number of your motherboard to see what range of processors will work with it. If you have an Intel motherboard, you can only use an Intel CPU. The same goes with an AMD compatible motherboard.

So, what exactly do you mean by "CPU"?

if you want to save money, simply upgrade the pc you have

ram, hd, video card, etc are easy and cheap to upgrade and can make a big difference in your pc's performance.

According to most tests done by Tom's Hardware and HardOCP, RAM and CPU upgrades are the two best bets as far as the performance/dollar ratio is concerned.

I'm going to take the parent post at face value and suggest www.newegg.com . I buy almost exclusively from them. They are a superb company with prices to match. I built the machine I am currently using over a year and a half ago for around $800. Despite its age and price, my box slices Half Life 2 and other recent games like butter. That's the power of newegg.

what i meant was just the complete package minus screen, keyboard, mouse....cause i have extra of those but no main part of the computer

www.pricewatch.com has some nice deals...just check out the sellers rating before buying.

OK, you just need the "box".

You got a couple of choices: have a tech-savy friend build you a sytem. The big box stores have display computer on sale. They usually have a keyboard and mouse, but the price is right. If your town has computer shows on the weekends, you can go and check out a lot of local vendors who have systems for sale. Since they build to order, you can have just the system that you want or can afford and leave off what you don't need...

Happy shopping!
