<p>Passage 1 didn't disagree about them not being present, he just didn't talk about it. He mereley started with an anecdote and stated that the cats made him remember he is prey. Then passage 2 started with an intro on cats going extinct, but he talked more extensively than passage 1's author about humans being members of the world and not dominating it, and how cats reminded him of this.</p>

<p>i said metaphor because a cant cant technically own or rent anything. So therefore metaphorically language in that a cat can literally be an owner or a renter.</p>
