Hello, people.

I have been doing practice tests for about 2 months ( + other kinds of prep - learning words, practicing grammar rules, doing math exercises etc. ) and my scores have become really high in W and M (as in 790 M and 740-760 W). It's not great but hopefully with more practice I will be able to do better till January.

My innitial scores in all the sections were low 600's. My problem is that while the W and M are cosiderably going up, CR stays the same.

The akward fact is that I read fast and I do read a lot but I'm not a native. So, even though I know most of the words in Sentence Completion, and I manage to do well on them, I usually screw up the passage-based qs.

So, if anyone who managed to score >750 in CR and is not a native, could he/she share his/her strategy ?

Thanks a lot.

My situation is like yours. Math and Writing goes up and CR don’t. I’m non-native too. Most people suggest to read books and learn words. If you have 1-2 month until you go to exam follow this directions. You can make start with 5 words per day and increase every day, for instance, +1 more. And read, read, read. Try to do little passages first(but in some cases, to do small passages is more hardly than big). Then I would suggest to take big passage and separate it to 5 parts, for example. And read very carefully, make paraphrase of each sentence when you read. First work without time limit. If you have 1-2 month until you go to exam follow this directions. You can also read BARRON’S 2400’s good tactics and strategies. For the Sentence-Complition I would suggest to learn word parts from BARRON’S SAT 23rd.(Because you cannot predict what word will appeard on the real exam and your vocabulary isn’t comprehensive, and if you know parts you can guess meaning of most words). Try to eliminate wrong choices. Buy Direct Hits(1&2).It’s a great book for making difficult S.C questions, at the end(usually). You may also learn Rocket Review vocabulary(323). It will help you to make easy questions. BUT, if you have a lot of time, of course it’s good to read interesting books(If I had a lot of time as you have I would read “TITANIC”). So, go and Good Luck!!!

I’ve got 5 months left till the exam and I will also be studying U.S.H. and American Lit, so hopefully these will help.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Good luck to you too.

Thanks. I’m always ready to help.

It is my belief that the CR section of the SAT is really only a truly valid indicator of reading comprehension for native English speakers. Non-native English speakers should not expect or be expected to perform at the same level on it as native English speakers with equal innate verbal aptitude.
