I am trying to balance whether I should just be proud of my kid or encourage her to hit the books and retake SAT in October. She is a math/science type and doesn't enjoy reading or has a bias against it. She is pulling a 4.0 (uw) with all core subjects as AP courses so I know she CAN do well.
First SAT 680CR/720M/690W
Second SAT 690CR/800M/760W
SAT subject test chemistry 790 math2 790

So should I hug her and tell her great job and leave it alone or should I suggest she try to do focused study for CR this summer and boost the super score. Should I have her do the subject test in English in a couple weeks?

She is at 2250 and strong science/math type.
Frankly, I’d leave it alone. This is where you celebrate and enjoy the summer!!!
What value would an English subject test do for her if she is going to be a math/science type major?

I suggest that you buy Erica Meltzer’s The Critical Reader (or ideally borrow a copy). Take a look through it and see if she thinks it would help. I think it can help most people and would probably be worth the time.

Go to the critical reader website.
Erica will tell you that it is difficult to get a score over 700 if the person was not an avid reader for years. She wrote an article on that very subject.

Actually, there’s a lot of useful info on the website. So I concur, definitely go to the website before buying the book. After reviewing the website, she’ll have a much better sense of whether or not she thinks the book will be helpful.

I think that someone with a 690 CR score may be able to improve a reasonable amount (or more) with Erica’s materials.

Thanks @CHD2013. This book looks very focused and promising. I think I will offer it up if she expresses desire to try the SAT again.

I appreciate the wisdom @TomsRiverParent , exactly what my husband said! I struggle with balancing her autonomy (it’s her college search and ambition at the center) but don’t want to neglect being a coach/cheerleader when I should point her in the right direction.

2250 is good, but it depends on what kind of schools your daughter is looking at. Ivy League schools find 2300+ competitive. What kind of schools are you and your daughter looking at? Also, it is very possible to go up from 690, if she wants to. It took me three months to increase from 690 to 800 in CR. I would be happy to provide tips if she decides to work on CR.
