My D is looking at schools like Middlebury/bowdoin/vassar she has an 800 in math ,high 700-800 on wr and a 630 in cr. She is more of a science /Math kid,and has never been much of a reader. She has learned direct hits vol 1 and 2. is there any hope to get this score up, and what is the lowest respectable score she can send to these schools?

Sure there is. The best practice would be for her to do as many CR tests as possible, and to make sure to look carefully and understand each and every question that she got wrong. As you do more and more, you get this innate sense for the questions.

I improved my CR score from 60 on the 2009 PSAT to an 800 on the 2010 Oct SAT. I’ve written a guide and posted it on here. The link is below. Hope it helps.

Very impressive, I will have my daughter read it!

I like Apoc’s guide :)

I got a 48 on the CR PSAT in October of 2009. In October 2010 I got a 710 CR on the SAT

All I really did was fix my test taking strategy (some of the guides on this forum are really helpful!) and studied my vocab with DH, which I see your daughter has done.

Is your daughter a senior? When does she plan to take it again? If she has taken all the practice tests in the blue book you can always order some PSATs from the College Board store. They have very good critical reading sections to use for practice and they only cost $3. A teacher told me about these and I found them very helpful when I had run out of practice materials.

I also agree with jlewis24, Siverturtle’s Guide and learning the vocab in DH were very helpful.

Tell her that when she narrows it down to 2 answer choices, don’t choose the one that “feels” right - you will fail. Instead, play Devil’s Advocate and ask yourself, “Why is this choice wrong?” Look for evidence in the passage, it is always there.

This advice should take her from mid 600s to mid 700s.

~Good Luck!
