Anyone auditioning for Crane School of Music on Dec. 8th? My D is auditioning that day.

I'm already a student at Crane, but at the audition your daughter will get to hear the brass ensemble, one of the top ensembles at Crane, in case she is interested in that kind of stuff.

Momof3- Good luck to your D.

Thanks. Euphgal, I am sure it will be a treat to hear the brass ensemble on audition day although I am sure she will just want to get the audition over with!!! So far most of the schools she has applied to have very long audition days where there is so much going on. I am sure everyone on the board knows what I mean. She would just like to go in and audition and leave without all the hype although we will probably partake of the campus tours that are available.

Violadad, thanks for your good wishes.

I don't know what we were thinking scheduling that audition on Dec 8th. Slipped my mind at the time but my younger D is dancing in the Nutcracker all this week/weekend and then with the audition next weekend in Potsdam I can see my holiday preparations getting pushed way way way back!!

If it's any help, not all auditions are day long events. DS had only 2 day long affairs. The rest were in and out, some were just 20 minutes long with a time prior for a warm up.

Thumper1 that is good to know.

It looks like out of her choices NYU is the only "in and out" audition. Eastman's site says you should be available all day the day of your audition, Ithaca has a whole day schedule (although we can skip out on the campus tour as we have done that), Crane is a day long, and we haven't heard from Fredonia yet.

Oh, well. It is but a day in the life I guess...

I am trying to convince D to apply to Hartt as well? Any thoughts, experiences out there? I seem to remember one or two on the forum had children there?

Momof3- My son started at Hartt as a five year double major, viola performance and music ed. I have no time this am for details, but I'll post his experience later today.

If you need info sooner, search the forum for Hartt, and a number of my older threads should come up.

Momof3- I quote from a post I made in July:

<...take a look at Hartt (University of Hartford). Their music ed program is very highly regarded, and successful completion results in meeting all CT state pre-certification requirements. My son was a 5 year viola performance/music ed double degree who dropped the ed portion 9 credits short of finishing to concentrate on performance.

He was very happy with both the performance and education departments, and there is a magnet school on campus that has had an ongoing (7-8) year
String Project NSPC: NSPC that allows string ed majors the opportunity to work directly with the elementary-aged kids beginning in their freshman year. They have also instituted a Band Project at the school (starting either year 3 or 4 this coming fall). Music ed classes include a lot of off-site direct experience at a number of the local suburban public schools.

My guess for next year's COA is $38k, but our experience is that Hartt is generous with merit aid. An audition on a primary instrument or voice is required, and the program requires both admission to UHartford and Hartt. A good portion of the freshman dorms have or are being redone within the last 2 years, and there is a brand new dorm slated to open in '08. Campus housing is available for all years of attendance. School is located in suburban West Hartford, but borders on a less than desireable area
of Hartford proper.

Off campus housing is fairly reasonable as well, particularly if you compare it to Boston and environs. Boston is accessible via I-84, about 2 hours by car. There is Amtrak service at the Hartford rail station as well. Bradley Int'l Airport is a 20 minute drive.>

Just to update it a bit, the new freshman dorm opened on schedule this fall. The Hartt atmosphere is one of cooperation and support, rather than competition. Virtually all of the music ed students with whom he graduated in May had secured public school teaching postitions by this past September.

Both Crane and Hartt are highly regarded as music ed schools, and I know a lot of school systems that actively recruit music ed grads from both these institutions. You might do better financially at Crane because of your instate status, but Hartt can be generous with talent based aid.

Hartford might prove to be a better town for the overall music and gigging scene, as there are a number of active performing orchestras (professional and non-professional), numerous visiting artists on campus and at local venues, and is close to Springfield and Worcester MA as well as Boston, all of which have an active music life.

Food for thought. Another good music ed choice is Ithaca.

Well, the audition went ok. My D said that she screwed up a couple of times in small ways but the horn professor was great, very nice and encouraging. There were 3 other horns auditioning yesterday. The horn teacher said she did not know how many slots there would be, around 5 seniors graduating in the spring I guess. While D was auditioning I talked to a Freshman horn player who said there is a lot of comraderie among the horns in particular at Crane.

Euphgal, were you in the brass ensemble? I noticed there was one female euph player in that group and my D and I were wondering if that was you.

Momof3: Yeah, that was me in the brass ensemble. I hope your daughter enjoyed it.

We did enjoy it. Well as much as anyone probably did considering we were all anxious for the auditions to be over with already!! We also really enjoyed the clarinet quartet that played in the Commons after the tour (I believe they were faculty). We had to get home so we didn't take the full campus tour, my D had to be to work by 4 pm. I was happy the weather cooperated for our trip.

FYI: D got her acceptance letter for Crane yesterday (Music Ed w/ French Horn concentration)!! That was really fast as the Horn prof told us we probably would not hear until after all the auditions were over, around March. It is a real boost to her confidence knowing that she now has someplace to go for sure. As she said "No matter what I am officially a part of the Class of 2012 now!!"

That is fantastic news! Congratulations.

Congrats to you and d.
