I thought I did pretty well on my midterms considering that I studied pretty hard for them (they were my only hope of getting all As first semester), but I ended up not doing well on ANY of them. I don't know *** happened, but w/e that's a thing of the past. Anyway, I'll be ending 1st semester senior year with all goddamn B+s! How big of a deal would this be?

The B+s will be in 4 AP classes. I think the biggest problem was that I screwed up first marking period and got all B-s because I wanted to finish all my college apps early. I finished second marking period with all As but that wasn't enough to make up for the crap from first MP. On the bright side, the midyear reports my HS sends will include marking period grades so colleges will see the difference between my 1st and 2nd marking periods. Will this improve my situation? Am I freaking out too much? :P

Thanks in advance

Your grades are what they are. You’ve applied where you’ve applied. They will decide what they will decide, and you’ll find out eventually. You can’t do anything about anything of this by freaking out.

If you have applied to a good mix of matches and safeties, and reaches if you wanted to, then there’s no reason to freak out.

I’m afraid I do think you’re grasping at straws when you talk about getting all B-'s because you were working on your applications, or hoping that your second-quarter grades will eclipse your first-quarter grades. If you are applying to the most selective institutions (as a nerdy Asian kid might–sorry for stereotyping), you will be at a disadvantage compared to the applicants who did their applications, took a lot of AP classes and still got A’s. If you’ve also applied to some institutions that regular people go to, then they’ll see that you took a demanding course load and juggled all your responsibilities reasonably well.

What do you mean by most selective institutions though? I’m applying to a lot of top 30 schools, but definitely not schools as selective as HYP and the like.

I was deliberately vague because I don’t know just where to draw a line. I don’t think anybody can tell you something you can bank on, especially when you’re talking about colleges and universities that reject most of their applicants.

At colleges and universities where most applicants take demanding classes, do their applications, and still get all A’s, you have a problem because your competition will look stronger than you in this respect. Even that doesn’t mean you won’t get in, because many top 30 colleges and universities practice holistic admissions. But if you are among the minority of applicants whom they accept, it will be because of something else in your file, and in spite of your mid-year grades.

My schools didn’t request the midyear because I submitted like legit the night before and my guidance counselor submitted the transcript so I didn’t even have to our in the mid year it was already on it. But I hope the colleges understand that I’m assuming they do

Alyssa, if I were you, I wouldn’t assume that colleges and universities know what my guidance counselor and I are thinking. Contact them, and make sure they’re OK with the information that they have from you.

I think you have to send the final grades. I think B+ are OK especially for AP classes.
