I know a student (who now is a senior) whose overall gpa is 3.0 but his SAT score a 2350 (he said he only omitted 5 questions overall) . ***? Why can't I do that? He doesn't even try in school!

EDIT: It's his cumulative UW GPA

A 3.0? I don’t know…

because you’re less intelligent.

God da m it, im saying that how can someone have a 3.0 gpa but have a near-perfect sat

he could have had a rough few freshman year? like all c’s? or maybe doesn’t do his homework? i wouldn’t jump to conclusions about someone’s intellegence, when you do not even know the person or anything about him. the only thing you do know for sure is this “crazy kid” probably is intellegent.

Because SAT scores are not correlated to intelligence.

^Because GPAs has a stronger correlation with work ethic than with intelligence, which, in turn, has a stronger correlation to SAT scores than SAT scores do with work ethic.

That is not to say that you can be very dumb and get a 4.0 at some schools; however, at most public schools, with a lot of effort and time, a student can achieve a high GPA. On the contrary, while high SAT scores may come naturally to some intelligent students, effort and time alone often aren’t enough to get very high SAT scores for many students.

In short, he’s very smart and likely a very good test taker. However, he is also either very lazy or subject to circumstances that did not allow him to do well in school. Do not make the mistake that I am saying that you are not intelligent: although many high scorers on the SAT are very intelligent, many intelligent people score poorly on the SAT. This can be due to a variety of reasons.

I like to call these types of kids the “lazy genius” I know people like these. They do nothing in class because they’re just unmotivated or just don’t want to but they are still some of the most intelligent people I’ve ever known! I find it sad because if they actually applied themselves, they could be truly successful.

Because you’re two different people.

perhaps some people do not care for what you consider “truly successful”

There are intelligent and diligent people. He’s the intelligent, but not diligent type.

I know the type well, as I am one of those types. I like the term “lazy genius” that was coined above. After graduating college, working up the corporate ladder, changing careers, and now as a physician, my perspective has totally changed. The world, at the higher levels of careers, have plenty of “geniuses.” What makes people successful is how hard that they work (and whom they know, but that is another topic). Thus, I have instilled in my kids that hard work, persistance, diligence is much more valuable in the real world than pure intelligence. Being a “genius” is not special at all if one is lazy. I’d rather work with a hard-working, non-genius.

I think it’s bad to jump to the conclusion that the other kid is “intelligent.” He obviously isn’t that smart if he gets 3.0 without trying, because if he were a “genius” as some claim he is, he’d have near a 4.0 without trying - THAT’s genius.

Let’s just say that he’s meant for the SAT, and is lucky.

uh, maybe it’s just my school (it’s not), but if you do literally no homework, you will very likely get a 3.0 or worse.

^^Amen.

(These words have been added in order to satisfy the minimum word count…ignore them)

There are different types of geniuses. Obviously his super intelligence is the kind that is made for test-taking.

i know a guy who had a ~2.5 UW GPA and a 2280 who went to community college for a semester (and getting straight As) and transferring to berkeley. for smart-but-lazy people out there, i guess it sure beats spending hundreds of hours in high school perfecting projects, studying for tests, etc.

i used to be a 100% “lazy genius” but now i’m even half-assing that, doing most of my homework, but in the car or in other classes

i got a 3.7 last quarter (what a badass, right? hella getting ice cream when school starts again)
