Creative Writing Alternatives

Hello, I’m a rising senior in HS and I am kind of struggling because I don’t really know if I want to go to college anymore. All I know is that I want to write stories, preferably novels, plays, and screenplays, so I was wondering if there were any 2 or more year programs that will allow me to grow and expand my portfolio. I ask this not only because I’m not exactly interested in college but also because I haven’t done that well in High School and although I know I can take the SAT again, I would rather not and I scored pretty badly. If there aren’t any programs I guess I’ll just go to a Community College and transfer or something, but the whole reason why I am asking about this is because I am not sure my heart is in the right place for college or if it will ever be so I just want to know my options before I make any decisions.
Thanks.

Join a writing group to hone your skills. Chances are there are some nearby. Typically these are either free or very low cost.

Can your family afford a private, four-year, residential college? If so, look into Columbia College Chicago. They have a good Writing program, with open admissions.

Champlain College’s Professional Writing Program sounds exactly like what you’re looking for. It’s a four-year degree, but it’s very, very career-focused. When I went, one of the professors actually said something along the lines of how it wasn’t a school for academics, it was a school for real-world preparation (this ended up being a turn-off for me, but it sounds in-line with your interests).

Their financial aid isn’t known for being that great, but they do give some merit money, depending on your grades and SAT scores. And they have a pretty high acceptance rate, although for the Professional Writing Program, you will have to submit a portfolio.
