Can anyone comment on the creative writing opportunities at Vassar? Is it difficult to get into workshop classes? Are these limited? Are independent study classes possible?

difficult to get in: I don't know...I'll let you know after preregistration.
limited: as in not many classes for creative writing? Sort of...but not really. There are classes for most types of creative writing, but from what I understand there is a focused pathway if you want to take a lot of creative writing classes.
independent study: I'm not sure. There's independent study classes for everything so I'm sure you could swing one for creative writing.

Now for a general statement for creative writing at vassar:
You're not allowed to start creative writing classes at Vassar until your soph year. In your sophmore year, you usually take composition, which is fiction writing. Its a full year thing but you're allowed to just take a semester of it if you want. I've heard nothing but good things about it. One of the sections next semester is taught by an artist and an english prof. From what i understand, the class focuses on combining your writing with sketches you make. Sounds really interesting, but i can't draw so I'm not taking it. After that there are classes in nonfiction, narrative writing, and verse writing. All of them are supposed to be good. You don't even have to be an english major for most of them, just senior comp. I think they try to encourage outside majors to take them.
