Creative writing courses at Yale?

I'm interested in taking CW courses at Yale at some point in the future. I consider myself a pretty good writer, but I definitely don't know how I stack up against the talented masses at my future college! :) So I guess I was just wondering - how do you know which creative writing class is right for you? I know there's an applications process; do they sort you into the appropriate level then, or do you have to pick a class and then apply specifically for it?

And does anyone have any experience with the classes themselves? Are they useful, worthwhile, eye-opening? Any one class in particular that was outstanding? I know this sort of workshop deal primarily depends on the mix of students, but are there any faculty that especially stood out to you?

Hoping someone can answer any of these questions - thanks!

I’m only going to be a freshman next year, so I can’t help you too much, but I went to a seminar given by Anne Fadiman at Bulldog Days and as far as I can tell you apply for a class specifically. For her class she got 120+ apps for 12 spots. But she sounded like such a fantastic teacher I’m going to apply every semester until I get in!

ohhhhhhhhhh, Anne Fadiman is AMAZING. I’ve never met her - I couldn’t go to Bulldog Days, for one - but I am sort of in love with her and her work. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down? My default Christmas present to people I like but am not intimate with. Ex-Libris? Also lovely (although I waffled with her depiction of Coleridge reading Robinson Crusoe at Christ’s Hospital… I’m sure he could have been a huge rereader, but wouldn’t RC be from his earlier days?). At Large and At Small kinda paled in comparison, but whatever, everyone has bad days.

120+ for 12 spots though - that is insane! I guess I’ll just have to apply every semester too! It sounds like it’d be such an amazing experience, though…
