Creative Writing Summer Programs

I just realized that a) I did not put my name on every page of my portfolio, as the Iowa website requested, and b) I may have used staples instead of paper clips. PLEASE, LET ME HAVE USED PAPER CLIPS.

I really should have read over their website better. :-/ I hope it won’t affect whether I get in or not. Of course, I’m a freshman, and they say it’s really rare for one to be accepted, so I wasn’t getting my hopes up anyway…though the Assistant Editor-In-Chief of our literary magazine has attended Iowa’s writing program, and swears that I’ll get in. =) She’s read my poetry, and she’s an amazing writer herself, so who knows? Maybe she’s right.

I’m banking on Sewanee and UVA, though. Hopefully, one of the three will work out.

if anyone has any questions about iowa, pleeease IM me! i loved the program and could go on for days about it

ugggh, the Duke TIP Ghost Ranch program ([Duke TIP Summer Programs—Field Studies and Institutes](http://www.tip.duke.edu/summer_programs/field_studies.asp)) looks so so so SO amazing…i wish it wasn’t so expensive and didn’t start the day after my graduation! ■■■ does anyone know any programs similar to that (in the sense that it’s held at, like, a sort of ‘secluded’ area)?

Just a warning: Be wary of any program that requires a transcript or no portfolio. You want to be surrounded by the best writers, not the best students, if you really want to grow.

For those worried about money, I’d just ask! Call admissions and ask. If the program doesn’t have a particularly impressive endownment, they may have private donors who are willing to donate to specific applicants (this happened to a friend of mine at Interlochen).

Ha, on a note with transcripts for anyone that might be worried (then again this is CC so I’m probably the only one), transcripts for Iowa are only to make sure you’re a student (except in the rare cases of students failing various classes).

Oh no. I didn’t put my name on every page or use paper clips for Iowa. Am I screwed? Should I email them? Consolation appreciated.

I doubt the paper clip vs. staple thing is that big of a deal, guys.

No one is screwed. :P

For the record though, I used paper clips. ;)

ehhh you’ll probably be fine, juniormints.

Yes, I’m sure they won’t freak out about that…

Plus I seem to remember “prefer” not “require” being written on the webpage. :D

To everyone who is fretting over not using paper clips and/or not writing their names on their works, director Stephen Lovely writes, in response to my email:

“No worries. I’ll figure it all out, and you won’t be penalized.”

Hope that helps ease the tension :)

That eases the tension a ton. Wow, if I’m getting THIS freaked out over a summer writing program, I can’t imagine how I’ll flip over my college apps in a few years. Waiting is going to be agonizing. :/

hey so far I am only applying to 2 programs this summer: iowa and kenyon. are those too competitive? i got into UVA last year but couldn’t go because of an injury…should i apply to more?

Hi everyone! Long time lurker on CC, haha… finally succumbed to the inevitable and got an account. Anyway, I went to Iowa last year and it was so amazing. Feel free to ask any questions! Also, totally don’t freak about little things like the paper clips or whatever–one of my friends at Iowa turned her teacher rec in a week late b/c the teacher forgot to do it… it ended up fine, obviously, b/c she got in.

That would be my situation^

^Turned rec in late? My friend was so mad at that teacher.

If you don’t mind me asking musicallylatin, when did you attend?

Anyone here actually attend the UVA program? I was wondering what it is like.

I’ve only applied to Iowa and Sewanee myself. Hopefully, I’ll get into Iowa, Session II, because that would work magically with my summer, but I can’t imagine turning down Sewanee if I’m not accepted to Iowa. Now I’m kinda wishing I hadn’t been too lazy to apply to UVA haha.

Oh, haven’t attended. I meant this year, I just got my rec in late. I wasn’t too frustrated with the teacher. I knew what I was getting into when I asked him. :D

Anyone else gonna email Iowa today for the confirmation?

Confirmation? I thought we didn’t find out until April…

^ It’s to see if they got it in the mail yet. :)
