Hi,
I am thinking about applying to the Iowa Young Writers' Studio. Has anyone attended this program? If so did you enjoy it?

Also, I know it's pretty selective... Do you think my grades will affect my acceptance? I am a junior and earned an A in English fall semester, but I didn't rediscover my childhood passion for writing until this semester and that's why I got B+s in English Frosh and Soph year..:(

I've never attended myself, but it looks reputable--the friendly tone of the website is a good sign! It obviously is not a commercial endeavor, and the price is reasonable.

It is hard to get into. And this year will be particularly hard because some spots will already be taken by people who were admitted last year but could not attend because of the floods last year. They had to cancel one of their two sessions.

Hey guys, I attended Iowa as a rising Junior last year. It's a lot of fun and you learn a lot - definitely the best camp I've ever been to in my life. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, or ask here. :) My problem is after Iowa, I have no program to apply to now! It looks like the PA gov schools are going down, sadly, so idk what to do.

i attended as well. DEFINITELY apply if you're serious about writing-- it's an incredible experience. i was a rising senior last year, and i took a fiction class that was....well, it was unlike any class i've ever taken. probably one of the best classes i've ever taken. if you need help with anything at all, or have questions about the program, let me know (i know prismatic already offered-- now you have TWO people to help you out!).
prismatic-- there's a program at kenyon. check it out.
topgirl-- dont worry about your grades, im sure you'll be fine. i think what matters most is the writing sample, your statement of purpose, and your rec. i feel like everyone in the program was really bright, but that our GPAs probably differed quite a bit. your B+s shouldnt be a problem. just write a strong sample.
prismatic....im trying to think of who was from PA...damn this is gonna bug me all afternoon. dana? ilanna? i am so going to figure this out.....
honestly if anyone has any questions, let me know. im so excited for all of you/jealous.

If you're serious about writing and happen to be interested in genre (fantasy/science fiction/horror) short stories--check out Alpha (Alpha SF/F/H Workshop for Young Writers). Everything prismatic and ca2013 have said about Iowa, I can say with all my heart about Alpha.

Alas, it's too late for me to apply (school takes a month to process transcripts) and I couldn't ask my parents for so much on top of the 5-week summer program I'm already accepted to and that I love (French immersion, also a more parentally acceptable pursuit than creative writing).

hahaha, nice! :) I think I was the only person from PA, actually. Diversity, lol.
GPAs varied. Some kids were all set for Ivies, others weren't well-rounded. I definitely fit the latter catergory - I had Bs in Math and Comp Sci. They definitely care most about your writing, and people submitted very different things. Some did the first chapter of stories, others did excerpts from journals...Mine was an excerpt from a story that had a poem in it, along with three other poems.
Yeah, we'll just talk about Iowa whether you guys want to hear or not, because it was AWESOME. :)

keilaxender we get it, you love tamora pierce and alpha. You really don't need to post that stuff in a thread about a specific summer camp that isn't alpha.

Furby, a poster asked specifically for writing workshops similar to Iowa. From various descriptions of the Iowa workshop, I believe that Alpha would appeal to a similar demographic (albeit with the genre specialty).

I'm applying to this as well. I'm getting my port ready (it's almost done)--for those who have applied and gotten in, do you think they'd prefer a good variation of "different" writing samples (ie, some poems, some prose, etc) in our portfolios?
