Hi cherryli2015 -I saw your private message, but do not have enough posts on here to be able to reply. I would love to tell you more about IYWS (or anyone else who is interested!) If you’re comfortable doing so, you can message me your email address and I can email you directly with info about my experience, workshop leaders, etc. It’s going to be the best two weeks of your life - I can promise you that much!

Congratulations on your acceptance and scholarship. I’m sure it will be a wonderful experience.

How does Juniper Institute for Young Writers (at UMASS) compare with NYS Summer Young Writers Institute(at Skidmore College)? Anyone has experience?

Just got into Juniper!!! EEEP! So excited

RE: “I have discussed summers with admissions directors. The only kids who can even begin to take advantage of any of these programs are the privileged. Thus, they are discounted and not considered in the college admissions process…”

Though many are disagreeing with this statement, posted earlier in this thread, I believe that it is basically correct. Both admissions officers and two different experienced high school counselors have told us similar things. Their thoughts, universally, were that the programs help SOLELY to show that your child did something productive in the summer. Programs that cost 3 and 4k a summer are considered pay and go so long as you have the $ and basic skill set.

What they said is MUCH more useful (in terms of being considered in the college admissions process) are programs such telluride and state Gov. Schools that are usually free and highly competitive with the best students in the country or state…not good students whose parents can pay. They further explained that these programs also show that you had the drive to compete against the best and show your willingness to participate in (and they believe there is growth from) programs with kids of all economic backgrounds.

That being said, I would think that the writing programs that are known to encourage all income levels and have good scholarships, along with accepting those who can afford to pay, would carry some weight. It might also depend on what you take away from the program and how, if at all, you spin in admissions essays.

In the end, one of ours is attending a fee based program. He is excited to be with other writers, regardless of whether it will impact college admissions.

Can someone give me some feedback on the UVA program for poetry? Thanks.

Totally agree. The pay to play doesn’t help, however earning a slot on the competitive, but free programs is noteworthy.

Everyone who’s been accepted into the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop: There is a group on Facebook called “Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop 2013,” and you can add yourselves to meet other attendees.

I would have to disagree here on these statements. My daughter qualified to go to Duke TIP, but we do not have the money to send her. It is too expensive and we just simply cannot afford it. However, she will be attending Duke TIP this summer because she was given a scholarship that cover almost 90 percent of the costs. We had to contributed with a small amount, and the cost of the flight to get there. So for us, the fact that she qualified to apply is more than enough, and she will have the opportunity that she wouldn’t have had if it weren’t for the scholarship she was given.
I hope this “true story” helps clarify a bit the true behind places like Duke TIP… not only the people with the money to pay goes there.

I know both IOWA Young Writer Studio and Kenyon Review provide financial aids.

Anyone applying to anything for summer 2014?

I’m applying to Kenyon and would like to apply to Alpha and Iowa, but my college counselor thinks I should wait until next summer (rising Junior at the moment). I’d really like to try a scriptwriting camp, but all of the ones I see look sort of scam-y. Does anyone have suggestions?

Hi, does anyone here know anything about Juniper Institute for Young Writers? I’m applying, and I’d love to know more about the program!

@starkly, check out http://theyoungwriters.org/programs/summer-program
There is a very positive review of this program somewhere in this thread (though I don’t think it was for the scriptwriting). I don’t have personal experience with it, but as far as I can tell it seems like a good program. My daughter is pretty excited about it and was going to apply for this summer, but we realized the schedule won’t work this summer, so she’s hoping to go next year.

Oops, I just saw the deadline was March 1. Well, you could contact them and see if they’ll take a late application.

Hi - i am a parent of a high school junior creative writer. She got accepted to UVA and Kenyon’s Summer program, and is still waiting to hear from IOWA. Wondering if anyone has experience with both UVA and Kenyon, or even just one of them, because they both look really great. We visited Kenyon last week to see if it might be a school she would like as a college student, and we all liked Kenyon, none of us have been to UVA in many years, and not sure she wants to go to such a big school. But for the summer writing - any thoughts? Thanks,

Was accepted into Sewannee and UVA and will hear back from Juniper soon hopefully… Any advice on which one to go to? Unfortunately missed the deadline on IOWA and Kenyon, but I’m looking at them for the future, so does anyone have thoughts on those programs as well?

Kingman and JGrimm, if you read back in this thread, you will see comments from participants in previous years. My d was accepted to UVA and Kenyon and is planning to go to Kenyon. They both sound like great programs.

Does anyone know how hard it is to get into Alpha? They judge the whole thing based on one story (no teacher recommendation, transcript, etc)

Hey y’all, haven’t logged in for a while due to schoolwork, but since it’s spring break and admissions decisions are coming out I decided to log in.

Congrats to those accepted and really sorry to hear about those of you who were rejected.

I ended up applying to Iowa, UVA, and the Stanford Summer Institutes. Rejected from Iowa (it kind of hurt, but I found grammatical errors and an incomplete sentence in my writing sample after I submitted it, so I wasn’t getting my hopes up), accepted at UVA (yay! so excited, will be attending), and still waiting on the Stanford program.

@starkly, I think it might be too late for this year, but if you’re still interested in scriptwriting next summer you might want to look into NYU Tisch’s program: <a href=“Special Programs”>Special Programs;

@Kingman and @JGrimm, judging from various CC threads I’ve read, I think Iowa is the most prestigious/“best” summer writing program, Kenyon is a close second, and UVA and Sewanee are tied for third. Alpha is supposed to be good if your work falls under one of the genres that it covers, but not so useful/fun if you don’t write in those genres. I have no idea where Juniper falls, but I’m guessing it’s below all five previously mentioned because of the lack of hearsay on it…

But everyone who goes to a program swears that theirs is the best/was amazing, so…I think you’ll enjoy whatever program you attend.

If anyone is interested, I compiled a list of links to some reviews for the different programs. There are probably more floating around on older threads but I’m not going after those now.

If anyone has attended any summer creative writing program (even if it hasn’t been talked about on this thread), please post a review! It’ll make it so much easier for next year’s applicants to decide which programs to apply to and attend. I promise I’ll post a review when I get back from UVA.

Finally, I’ve seen conflicting reports on Iowa’s acceptance rates over the years. The estimates have varied from 12% to 30%. My Iowa rejection email mentioned that “over 400” students were turned away this year, and that this year was their most competitive (in terms of numbers of applications). There are 132 students accepted each year. I’ve read on CC that Iowa has a (short?) list of “alternates”, which is an effective wait-list. Therefore, I’d estimate that this year, there were about 600 applications. It follows that the acceptance rate this year was about 22%.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for this - it’s fantastic! Great information!
