Creative Writing Summer Programs

Hopkins is well-known for creative writing, actually, with a strong Writing Seminars major. But that does not necessarily reflect upon CTY.

Oh, odd. I wouldn't have guessed that.

20 days.
Uhg.
Can you believe it hasn't even been a month since apps were due? It seems like so much longer.

Here's one I haven't seen before, choice between creative and expository writing:
Rhodes College | Summer Writing Institute
June 14-26, $1500.

Looks interesting.

I wonder what acceptance rates look like. (Just to see my probability.)

24 days until letters are sent out.

Ughh. I want to know now.

Same here...

Do you think it would be ok to call April first and ask if we were admitted?

omg yeah! instead of waiting for the letter :P
i would, but i would die if i got rejected over the phone lolol

I asked my English teacher what she thought of that today, and she said it might not be the best idea, because if they did it as panel decisions, you might not get the person that knows/read your stuff.

ic. and actually i really wanted to try out cty but i haven't taken the SATs yet -.-

ah, try to chillax you guys=)

Ok, well I'm probably just saying this cuz I have until May to wait for my reply from CSSSA. But really, look on the bright side--APs are coming soon--haha, in May again.

I'm just trying to keep busy and keep my mind of off acceptances/rejections.

And I really am not helping by mentioning the "A" and the "R" words!!

Ha...

The "R" word at my school is something different.
They're trying to ban the word "reatard". I think it's so stupid. Just more censorship. I understand commonly used swear words, but "retard". Here its not even commonly used to refer to the mentally handicapped students.

Whoa, that's unusual. I didn't know schools could ban words outside of out-right swearing--and the word "retard"? lolls, I rarely use it, but when I do, I don't think of mentally handicapped people either. let us know if they actually manage to ban it or not =P

Just because you don't think of mentally handicapped people when you use the word doesn't mean that it isn't discriminatory toward those people. Historical connotations matter. I don't believe in banning any kind of swearing or similar restrictions on freedom of speech, but I do consider the word "retard" offensive the same way "gay" and "nigger" are offensive.

I find the use of the word 'retard' disgustingly offensive and kind of vile.

Anyone applying to any other programs?

I just think it's somewhat of a pointless campaign. Why choose that word to bad? There are so many others at my school that have not been touched. I'd rather see the word "gay" or "fag" go first. For all I care, pull the word "nerd" or "freak". Those are more commonly used where I am. Most of the students here love our mentally handicapped students. There are other things that should be taking priority.

But, as for programs, back on topic...

I'm kind of looking into the Simon's Rock one. Has anyone been there before?

Valid points, indeed.

But no, I've never heard of Simon's Rock until now :P Could you post their link if they have one?

Young Writers Workshop — Summer Writing Workshops for High School Students

From what I hear, their writing program college wise (at least for their early college) is pretty good. How good, I don't know. I was hoping someone here did.

The one at Alfred doesn't look too shabby: Alfred University : Summer Programs : Pre-College : Creative Writing

The Alfred program looks like a typical creative writing camp, which is quite different from a creative writing workshop. (For an excellent example of the latter, see Iowa Young Writer's Workshop.) Workshops may also be selective and require previous experience and/or talent. If you're seeking a serious workshop experience, no portfolio requirement should be a huge red flag. On the other hand, if you just want to write for fun, there are plenty of places where you'll have a great time.
