Creative Writing Summer Programs

I’ll check. Thanks!

I’m feeling better now!

A lot better. Who knew, writing would help me feel mad about writing.

Musicallylatin, my daughter was rejected from her 3 programs: Iowa, Kenyon and UVA. Persevere and you will end up with a great summer.

Does anyone know good Iowa is with financial aid?

Does anyone know about Sewanee’s FA? I cannot find anything about it…

Sorry–no idea about Financial aid for both of those.

But yes, @ musicallylatin, my poetry teacher has always encouraged collecting rejection slips/letters… We actually celebrate rejections, weird as it may sound :stuck_out_tongue: She always tells me how it took her years to get published, and how looking back, it was wonderful to see how the rejection slips went to automated responses to handwritten notes and invitations to submit more work.

So yes, don’t give up!! :)

WTH still no reply from Iowa for me…

I’d call at this point ns.

It might just be easier.

The fear is building up inside. I absolutely despise phone calls :frowning:
I’m going to try an email first.

Oh, that works too.

Received my rejection. I expected it, but still. It was disappointing :(

Do any of you guys know how difficult it is to get into the Denison Writing Program? I’m just curious about how prestigious it is

I’m sorry Ns. I can honestly say, I know how you feel.

Are you going to try next year?

Haha, doubt it. I’m going to be pretty busy next year… there’s some family reunion cruise already being planned and there’s a ton of other programs that have caught my eye that I couldn’t apply to this year as I wasn’t eligible. (Grade-wise)

But yeah… oh well, i gave it a shot.

Um sorry, haven’t heard of Denison before.

but on another note: yay!

I got into CSSSA/Innerspark :P

Just felt like I had to sort of make a shout-out, I’m definitely on some other-worldly dimension right now. And it’s my prom night tonight too~

Groan
I wish that I have stumbled on this site before becoming a junior nearing the end of the summer. Curse procrastination, that old time thief.

Is there summer hope yet for an aspiring writer like me? I wish to make writing my bread and butter but it appears that I’m dreadfully out of the know.

@The_Procrustean, I’m guessing that you’ve already looked up the application dates for most of the programs we’ve listed in this thread–but if you haven’t, I encourage you to do so, because some of the less selective ones might still be open for applications till the end of May.

The sad truth is that most of these do have extremely early application dates–I’m going to CSSSA this summer, and my porfolio had to be sent in by the end of February–so go figure.

The good thing though, is that if you genuinely love writing :), then there’s always your senior year summer to do a program, because most of these programs do accept rising College Freshmen. Plus, if you’re not that busy this summer, it could be a great time to start really writing pieces and submitting things to Lit mags (or finish that novel you never ended!) --I suggest you look up a list of small press lit mags to submit work to by checking out this book at your public library –> [Amazon.com: The International Directory of Little Magazines & Small Presses 2008-2009 (International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses): Len Fulton: Books](http://www.amazon.com/International-Directory-Magazines-Presses-2008-2009/dp/0916685748/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242265655&sr=8-1)

So ya, hope this was helpful and that you have a great summer :P

Do you guys know when the 2010 application forms and all the information for the summer of 2010 will be uploaded on all of these programs’ websites? Like I know that Walnut Hill and Iowa has. But like Sewanee, UVA and a few others haven’t yet. Do you know when they will upload their info for the summer of 2010?

Is it even worth applying to the Iowa Young Writer’s Studio as a freshman? I’m considering but given the teacher reccomendation I’m thinking it may be easier just to wait a year.

Am I better off applying to the Kenyon program, Young Writer’s Workshop at Bard’s College, and the Sewanee writing program? Which of these is most prestigious?

I hope this thread wakes up…

Silverwing,

It is definitely worth applying as a freshman. They select their people based on talent, not age or grade.

If you really want to do a writing program this summer, you should apply to a bunch. Last summer my daughter (a rising junior) applied to Iowa, Kenyon and UVA. She was rejected the Iowa and Kenyon but got a spot off the waiting list from UVA. In retrospect, she wished she had applied to 5 or 6 programs, instead of 3.

Kenyon is as highly selective as Iowa; they are the two best programs. The others are less selective but they are still hard to get into. I get the feeling there are fewer slots than is the demand. All these programs cannot take everyone who wants to come.

Okay, thank you. I’m applying to Sewanee, UVA, University of Iowa, Kenyon, and Bard College at Simon’s Rock for sure. I also might apply to Idyllwildarts and Walnut Hill.

Can anyone offer insight on the Bard College, Idyllwildarts, and Walnut Hill programs? No one seems to have mentioned their experience with them and any inside information would be very helpful - ie, how selective their programs are.
