Anyone have any experience with ENGL 280? I need a course that will count towards my liberal arts requirement, and this is the only course I can reasonably fit into my schedule. I do have a minor interest in creative writing, though, so convenience isn't the only reason I'm considering this course.

My only concern is the workload. I had a bad experience this semester starting out with too many credits. The class I ended up dropping ate up too much of my time, and my first wave of prelims didn't go as well as I wanted.

1) How much work exactly is this class? Am I going to be doing a lot of reading, or writing like 10 pages a week?

2) What are the discussions like? Am I going to have to read scholarly essays discussing creative writing, or am I going to get to practice my writing/creativity? In other words, does this class revolve around creative writing projects/assignments, or is it more like reading what people have written about writing, with assignments on the side kind of thing?

3) Should I take this course pass/fail? Again, I don't want to sac my other courses just for this. I like to focus very heavily on each course, and I don't want this to prevent me from doing that.

I'm also a little apprehensive because, while I enjoy writing, I'll completely crap out if I'm writing about something that involves some BS. Am I going to be able to write things I'm genuinely interested in, or am I going to end up BSing some papers?

Sorry for the long post, I just don't want a repeat of my current writing seminar, for which I end up writing a lot of BS.

did a search and reviving this thread - i’d like to know this as well. i just realized that just to be on the safe side for med school admissions i should have a course in the english department for certain med schools, specifically weill cornell. how is this course anyway? do you do both reading and writing? would this fulfill the requirement of an intensive writing course with a focus on on “English-language literature?” thanks!

I wish I knew too! it’s my intention to take this course anyway so whenever I do I’ll try to come give a general overview for CC posterity!
(I do know that it fills up quite quickly-- I wanted to take it this semester but as a slow-clicking sophomore I couldn’t grab one of the handful of spots that were left by the time we pre-enrolled.)

I liked that the course description said there would be workshopping in class time. I hope this is the case, because that would make work outside of class that much more efficient.

I took it! It was a good class. Every week a couple students out of your section submit one of their works for peer review, and you write critiques on them for homework, as well as talk about them in class. Very helpful. You also get to do interesting little writing exercises in class, which are fun. At the end you do have to submit 25~30 pages worth of writing as a portfolio, though, so make sure you keep writing throughout the semester.

thanks for the input, wrightspig and monydad! it’s nice to know people have had positive experiences. also, I gotta admit the idea of writing 25 pages is kind of exciting.
