I'm confused as to how credit hours work. The average per semester is like 16. I heard that one credit hour equals one hour in the class room and two hours doing homework per week. That would make the average hours of doing school work per week around 48. That is more work per week than a 9-5 job. So is that true? And if so, how do people manage to do jobs on top of this?

In general, it's more like for every credit hour, expect to spend one hour in the classroom and one hour on your own studying, doing homework, etc. However, it doesn't always work out that way. Some lecture courses that meet twice a week for 4 credits have little homework, and some science courses that meet twice a week for lecture, once for recitation, and one for a 4-hour long lab (still only a 4-credit course!) require much more time.

Essentially: 1 credit-hour = 2 student-hours, your mileage will vary.
