Second-semester freshman here. I know we have an 18-credit limit per semester, and that if you want to take more than 18 credits, you have to petition the dean, but does anyone know how easy the process is / if most petitions are granted? (I want to sign up for five classes in the spring - four four-credit ones and a three-credit.)

Check out page 50 of the Course Catalog (http://www.wm.edu/offices/registrar/documents/catalog/UGCatalog.pdf) for info on overloads. Not sure how often they are granted but the Committee may be more wary of granting them to underclassmen.

I hear that if you tell the College that you and Wu Zetian go way back, overloads are not a problem.

It is pretty easy for 19 and 20 credits. I did it several times, starting with my second semester. You just fill out a form and turn it in at the campus center. As long as your GPA is good it will be granted quickly. Supposedly it is more difficult if you want more than 20 credits, but I’ve never tried.
