crime at udel?

i'm thinking about applying to udel this coming fall (fall 2010), but as i read threads about the school i hear a lot about crime, is there really that much crime at udel?

"While there have been problems with the safety and security of a handful of UD students, there is essentially nothing to worry about. Safety issues are not uncommon in a college atmosphere such as Newark, where alcohol and youth account for a good majority of the crime. UD is certainly no worse than any other large campus and, if you put a little effort into avoiding bad situations, you should come through college unscathed.

On a day-to-day basis, most students don’t really worry about security. While it is always wise to keep an eye on your belongings, crime isn’t a major focus. The number of muggings, attacks, and rapes has been quite high, with the result that students have been a little more aware of their actions. There are many safety features on campus that help get students from one point to another, but these same features sadly do not extend to off-campus locations. This weakness has been a major issue, as nearly half of all UD students live off campus, and UD has taken some steps to change it. No college is completely free of problems, but Newark is a small town that is relatively safe and secure."

I agree with Soccer102592. Our S lives off campus and some of the crime alerts have occurred very near to where he lives. When we question him and his friends, they are pretty confident that they involve students who look for trouble. I wish this were 100% of the time, but it is not. In every community there is trouble and Newark is no exception. Udel is very good at publicizing this info, much more candidly than other schools. This is good in that it keeps everyone alert, but it does raise concerns as you brought up.

Apply to this school, it is an excellent University, keep your eyes and ears open, and find good people to hang out with!

@whldch - Do you remember the exact day that your S received his acceptance letter last year? Was it on 3/15 or slightly before and did he find out from a letter or online? Sorry, for all the question I am extremely nervous.

Actually the student I described above is not a Freshman, my other child got a Udel acceptance probably mid March last year. It was the last acceptance we received, well after the others. I remember calling the school in March and being told they had all been mailed out. Yes, very frustrating and anxiety producing. I’m pretty sure if you contact admissions they will tell you the exact date they will be mailed out. We had no hints or online notifications. I feel your pain Soccer, we’ve been there twice. If I’m not mistaken your letter will describe how many applications they had to process to make their decision. BTW - guessing your interests by your screen name, my S, who is on the quiet side, made some of his best friends and released a lot of tension at Udel a day or two after moving in by signing up for intramural soccer. Of course within the first week or two he got hurt so we had a chance to see how the medical center operated (they were excellent as well). Good luck

This is completely not true. I’m assuming this post refers to walking escorts offered at night and they will walk you back to your residence if it is in walking distance from the campus.
