So sorry to hear of the recent crime against UD students. This was as university that we considered. One thing we noticed on the tour was a lack of dorm security at UD. Maybe these incidents will result in better security measures. At city schools, where the crime situation is more acute, dorms have a security desk and anyone who doesn’t live there must be signed in by a resident. At UD, where it “seems” safe, these precautions aren’t taken. So there is a somewhat false “perception” of safety which can be more dangerous to students who let their guards down.

Yes, greater dorm security would be nice (particularly for dorm areas that are on the perimeter of campus, such as Rodney and Dickinson) … although I note the crimes discussed here primarily did not occur in the dorms, but off campus. I keep up with the Delaware Review and the UD crime stats, and the majority of reported crimes occur off campus on the streets or in housing occupied by students. The most undereported crime, sexual assault, likely occurs both on and off campus.

Not a crime against a student but arguably relevant to this topic is the below email that went a little earlier today from UD Alert. For those with kids in Rodney or Dickinson, it’s very near and dear.

The UD Police Department has been notified of an armed robbery at the Buffalo Wild Wings Restaurant on Elkton Road. This incident occurred today, 12/11/2012, at 4:02 pm. Two suspects were last seen running towards the Rodney Underpass. If you see anything suspicious, please contact the Newark Police at 302-366-7111.
