Crime Rate at JMU

Is it seemingly obvious that stuff gets stolen at JMU often? There are a few things that concern me about the crime rate at JMU after having read a few police reports:

1) an average of 5 crimes are reported to the police daily - judging from the reports I read
2) there is a lot of larceny/theft (usually electronics from what I noticed)

I know every school will have crime no matter where I go, but I feel as though these police reports contradict what everyone says about the student body being very warm and friendly.

The site where I got the police reports is here:
JMU - Public Safety Daily Crime Log

It feels very safe when you are actually there. It’s called leaving your dorm room open and leaving your backpack unattended. Also JMU is not a gated campus so just anyone from the community of Harrisonburg can come chill on campus so it really might not be the students.

If you have common sense you will not get burgularized at JMU.

My daughter volunteers weekly in the downtown area. Walks there and back by herself. Matter of fact, walks everyone, normally alone and quite safe. Of course she’s level headed, keeps her door in her room locked and possesions close with her. She’s never mentioned any sort of crime, in any way.

I’m a parent of a JMU student and looked over this log. For the month of March, there were 2.7 incidents daily. It seems like the majority of them were fire alarms and larceny in “unsecured” areas. It seems to be common sense to lock your room when you aren’t in it , don’t leave your wallet in the bathroom, and lock up your valuables at UREC. There were not any violent crimes but the run of the mill drunk in public, occasional graffiti and firecrackers. This seems to be what I would consider typical of any college campus. My daughter feels safe at JMU, does lock her dorm room, and occasionally uses the student cadet program ride home when she is across campus late at night. There are also emergency phones all over campus. I am comfortable that JMU is a safe university.

JMU is very safe. No worries!
