Does anyone know how they decide if you will get a full tuition scholarship? My son has JUST 1400 on his math/CR SAT score, and he has a 3.98 weighted GPA. One person I talked with at the school implied that once you hit 1400 other factors determine the award amount, such as GPA and rigor of classes. Another would not confirm that, and just said his stats looked very good and it was up to us. My son would prefer NOT to take the SAT again, especially since his October scores were worse than his previous ones in 2 of 3 areas, but if I press him he probably will. If it matters, he will have 9 or 10 APs when he's done, several honors classes, and 9 college credits. Thanks for any advice/opinions.

Hello! I am a freshman this year at Miami with a full tuition scholarship and my stats were similar to your son’s. Obviously there is no certainty when it comes to scholarships, but I can give you my stats for any insight: 1450 SAT score (without writing), 3.8 GPA, and 10 APs. Taking the SAT again couldn’t hurt–if he does better, it could put him over the top. I do also believe that Miami puts a lot of emphasis on students who are well-rounded, so try to exemplify this in the Common App and essays for the honors program. I’m sorry I could not be of more help, but I thought by showing you my stats it could give you some idea of the standards for a full tuition scholarship!

Thanks. Is the 3.8 weighted or unweighted?

I’m curious, several people have spoken about the importance of essayS in the HC admit. Miami doesn’t have a supplement and the CApp just has the main essay. I looked very carefully to see if students were later invited to apply to Honors and it’s clearly stated no additional app is needed, they will be selected from the applicant pool. Is this a change? Am I missing something. S3 certainly played to his strengths on his CApp essay, but couldn’t tailer it toward a single program as he would an essay on an honors app. He did attach a one page academic resume, which Miami allows.

So did S3 miss additional essays, or am I confusing language being used?

TIA! :)

btw - I’m not hung up on the Honors experience, although I do think he’d benefit. It’s simply one of many attributes at Miami to consider!

blueiguana, I was wondering the same thing. I’m assuming that the ‘importance of essays’ is referring to the common app essays. I hope we’re not missing something!
