Critical Reading and Writing: I can help you!

Hi!

just wanted to let you know that if you need help with SAT reading and writing, ask me! Don't ask about math though. That would be bad.

Tips for reading
1) DIRECT HITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was a pure CC godsend. Many, many words on the SAT were from these lists, and their way of describing the meanings makes you remember them.
2) On the paragraph improvement questions, read the paragraph quickly. It'll give you a better idea of what to look for in the questions than if you try to read the questions and then figure out what's wrong.

Tips for writing
The essay is completely formulaic. Short intro with a direct thesis -> 2 paragraphs -> No conclusion/1 sentence conclusion. Each paragraph should be direct. Mini-thesis that connects back to the intro, examples, analysis/explanation, concluding sentence.

Also, BLUE BOOK! Before you take the SAT, do as many SATs from the collegeboard book as possible, especially timed. If you don't have time to do a full SAT, do 2 -3 sections at a time, all timed, and finish the whole test over a couple days.

For writing practice - Blue book

If you just want techniques, or tips, you could look at Grubers or look at the Sparknotes online. You just need to know basic grammar, then tons and tons of practice.

I’ve done so so so so many CR practice tests, but I’ve only improved about 50-100 points…It’s the only thing keeping me from a 2200 or perhaps 2300! D: What should I do…

i have given more than 10 full practice tests, out of which 6 were from the blue book. i have even given separate CR sectional tests to improve my score. (all timed) but i’ve been stuck in a 470-570 range. :C what should i do?

Have you figured out what you’re getting wrong the most? Is it vocab, or paragraph improvement?

For the main reading sections, a big mistake is to go with your instinct or what seems right without relating it back to the paragraph. Remember - no answer is right unless its directly in the text. You have to be a little stupid to do well. Other than reading the questions before reading the passage, and underlining the phrases in the paragraphs that relate to the questions, closely reading and translating the questions before findng an answer that fit perfectly helped me the most.

What are you having a problem with specifically? Is there a timing issue? You’ve done so many practice tests already that you may be practicing your mistakes, not learning new skills.

I think I’m unable to find the correct answer in the given time period. and hence, i might be messing up because of all the pressure. i’m not sure though…
