Critical reading question

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has been investigating the treatment of women in a major financial services firm since a former executive alleged that she had been underpaid, excluded from outings with clients, and denied promotion because of her gender. If the commission sues the firm, it would be a rare case of the federal government's taking up the cause of a highly compensated professional in a workplace dispute.

The passage implises that the federal government traditionally intervenes in workplace disputes that
A) cannot be resolved in the judicial system
B) have repercussions for both men and women
C) are beyond the authority of state governing bodies
D) involve employees at the lower end of the pay scale
E) are not likely to result in further lawsuits

It can be inferred that the commission views the alleged treatment of the former executive as
A) possibly representative of a general pattern
B) clearly showing the need for legal reform
C) indicative of declining business ethics
D) posing a sensitive political dilemma
E) likely to prove difficult to verify.

I cannot find evidence for these 2 questions at all. And what is a "highly compensated professional"?

Thanks a lot.

1) D

2) A

Im not sure about number 2 but 1 seems accurate to me. In the last sentence, it states that "it would be a rare case of the federal government’s taking up the cause of a highly compensated professionial in a workplace’ This indicates that the women was working in a highly paid job, or “highly compensated professional”. So 1 would be D, involving employees at the lower end of the pay scale.

Number 2 is a little weird because Im not definite on the answer. i chose A because it says the comission has been investigating the treatment in a major fin. serv since…" It seems to show that the Commission was looking for a general pattern in the women being discriminated and then planned to “sue” Atleast that’s what I thought.

Edit: I apologize. Number 2 is definitely the correct answer. Well in the first sentence, the main key word is “since” and the plural word “women” Since its indicating “women” it infers that they were also looking for a pattern to this commissions racism.
Anyone else have any ideas?

Your explanation is awesome. Thanks a lot, WorkOverTalent.
Is your answer the result of Work or Talent btw? ^^

==================================

Such expedient misconception argues strongly for the
development and dissemination of a more accurate, more
objective historical account of native peoples -a goal
easier stated than accomplished. Native American societies
were nonliterate before and during much of the early period
of their contact with Europe, making the task of piecing
together a history particularly demanding. The familiar and
reassuring kinds of written documentation found in European
societies of equivalent chronological periods do not exist,
and the forms of tribal record preservation available-oral
history, tales, mnemonic devices, and religious rituals
strike university-trained academics as inexact. unreliaBle,
and suspect. Western historians. culture-bound by their
own approach to knowledge, are apt to declaim that bext to
nothing, save the evidence of archaeology, can be known
of early Native American life. To them, an absolute Void
is more acceptable and rigorous than an educated guess.

In lines 66-70, the author portrays Western historians as
(A) oblivious to the value of archaeological research
(B) disadvantaged by an overly narrow methodology
(C) excessively impressed by prestigious credentials
(D) well meaning but apt to do more harm than good
(E) anxious to contradict the faulty conclusions of
their predecessors

I choose A, since the historians refuse to acknowledge the Native American culture. But the answer is B. Is there any mention of a disadvantage?

Thanks a lot.

Haha thank you!

My answer is the result of Work. It took me a few minutes to fully grasp the idea. Im an average student that has to work really hard to accomplish things. Sucks, but anytime buddy!

“culture-bound by their own approach” is indicating a disadvantage.

Executive in a major financial services firm = highly compensated professional
