Critical Reading Summer Prep

So right now I'd say my CR score is around 650-670. Do you guys have any tips as to what the best approach is to raise my score to 750+ over the summer, and if it is possible? I'd say my reading comprehension ability is quite strong, although my vocabulary is very weak and that tends to be the reason why I miss so many questions.

Besides the standard practice tests, does anyone have any ideas as to what are good novels to read for preparation, and what websites I can read from to improve the score. Also, if anyone has any recommendations on vocab lists or other methods of improving my vocabulary.

I’m in the same disposition~
Review Books say that every correct answer has a supporting answer found in the passage, so maybe try reviewing questions that you got wrong by finding the supporting sentence/sentences to the correct answer and explaining to yourself all the other answers weren’t as good, or were without support. Then it’s just basic memorization for vocab~ Flashcards work, but it’s quite painful in my opinion. Try take a few words every week and constructing a totally absurd sentence with it. (ie. “That informative lecture on the pterylDACTYL was DIDACTIC” – Didactic= instructive). Use the vocab on the practice essay topics for the SAT. xD That’s 2 birds with one stone~!

I don’t think reading new books will help very much, but if you’re looking for more opaque literature, try Crime and Punishment, Catch-22, War and Peace, 1984…there’s alot more, but those few are pretty complicated readings. Charles Dickens novels are ridiculously boring and verbose, but good for comprehensive training–after all, most SAT passages are just as wry. >__>;;

Good luck!

when I try to memorize vocab words I write the word and a brief (usually one word) definition on a post-it and stick it on random things in my room so that when I walk past one I can force myself to get it in. You can also use flashcards. I recommend the sparknotes flashcards for english vocabulary (1000 words). I’ve discovered that those cards are identical to the words on Sparknotes 1000 most common vocab words for the SAT. If you have the BB memorize all the words you don’t know in its practice tests, and if you have time I think it’s worthwhile to study word roots (barron’s has a section on word roots). Also if you go to the sparknotes website they have novels that have SAT vocab in it. It’s free on there site. I’d try going there. Good luck :]
