Critical Studies

I applied undecided to the College. How competitive is the application process for USC arts & science students to apply for the critical studies major? Thanks for any insight in advance.

Critical Studies hahaha not that competitve cause i've never heard of it hahahhaa

It's a major in the Cinema-Television School at USC. I know it's tough to get into as a freshman, but I'm not sure about from within the University. That's what I want to know.

This past year, Critical Studies admitted 33 new freshmen and 55 transfers. I imagine, due to what I assume to be much lower transfer applicant numbers, that chances as a transfer are higher than as a freshman (taking into account that those 55 are probably split among mostly juniors and sophomores). The only advantage to already having been admitted undecided is that you will no longer have to worry about being admitted to the school at large. Other than that, I don't think being currently enrolled at USC would factor into an admission decision for Cinema-Television.

I am pretty sure that the Critical Studies is a double major with the Business program, I have a friend who was one of the 33 freshamn accepted to the program and right now she is interning at Paramount studios.

No, Critical Studies is only CNTV courses.

The business-cinema television joint track that's offered business students (through an invitation/supp. app process) is what your friend is in.

My son is in CS. It's one of the three undergraduate majors open to students in the School of CTV. He's currently interning, for credit, at http://www.participantproductions.com/. In the last week he's seen Robert Redford, Kayne West, and Spike Lee come through. He's reading and evaluating scripts.

Is this program at all different than what one would call a film studies program?

Some schools call it film studies, but then again, some schools also call their production programs film studies. Critical Studies at USC could be described as the history, analysis, and criticism of film.

Students in CTV have to take a variety of courses in all three undergrad areas. So CS majors will get probably more production and screenwriting courses than students in film study programs at other schools.

tsdad, the from the class list, it does'nt look like there's more production or screenwriting courses, but perhaps there is. At least, they don't seem like they're required, or the titles are misleading on the required courses list.

I was just accepted as a critical studies major and have read tons of info on this major. Critical studies majors are required to take two production courses (CTPR 241 and CTPR 290), usually during their junior year. Even this is more than film studies at most other schools, such as NYU where I've been told (by people who teach there) that cinema studies students have to beg to be let into production courses. But, at NYU, there are still cool internships.

Very well. I hope you enjoy it.
