I think that it could significantly help you, but I am not sure if you should write your main essay on it or not. I had a teacher tell me that you should never write about a disease (i think she said this because it may come across as you looking for pity points). However, crohn’s is a serious disease and it is definitely important for admissions to know that you had to deal with such a thing in order for them to get the full picture of you. Talk to others that are familiar with the college process and get their perspective on the matter. One thing you could always do is write an essay about something else and then have your school counselor advocate for you and say that you had to deal with crohn’s.
With all that being said, you have a very good GPA with a solid test score. I think that you would definitely get into the schools that you listed. With your stats, you could probably aim higher
It depends on if the person reviewing your application understands your issues.
I don’t having Crohn’s will help or hurt you. Many people have different types of issues they have to overcome. Like everyone else you should honestly asses your academic stats (including GPA, standardized tests, course rigor) as well as your financial needs and apply to a wide range of reach, match, and safety schools that appear affordable (you will have to run a net price calculator for each school you consider) and that you would be happy to attend.
More importantly, do you feel you will be able to endure the lifestyle at college with Crohn’s? As you know, you need sleep, good nutrition, and the flexibility to lay low when you have flare ups. Be aware of your body. Don’t ignore the signs you’re all too familiar with.
Best of luck to you.
If you want to inform the schools of your struggles with Crohn’s as a way to explain or add context to your grades you should have your guidance counselor do that is his/her report and focus your own essays on other things about you.
But if you want to writean essay on your Crohn’s as a way to illuminate something about you then be sure to include a paragraph on how you currently have or plan to stabilize your disease while you are in college so that you won’t look like a potential medical and accommodation burden to the school.
Lots of good advice here. I wouldn’t make it the focus of your essay. Point it out somehow, but also make sure the school is aware of how you plan to stabilize your condition, as Scipio mentioned.
But most of all, take care of yourself, and stay on top of it! All through your life - don’t let it go unmanaged, and make sure you get to your checkups. Your health is the most important thing.
