I'm from a suburb of Chicago. Originally, I wanted to go to a warm southern school. Then, I started to be concerned with a huge culture shock and southern schools being less reputable than northern ones? These schools are pretty close in rankings, so as of now I'm trying to find the one that would be the best fit. I'm very outgoing and plan to be very involved in school activities(intermurals/sorority), love sports and plan on doing business/ pre-pharmacy

Kansas

Pros:
Love the campus
driving distance
Great Downtown
26% out of state

Cons:
In the middle of nowhere
Cold!:(

Fsu
Pros:
Great spirit/ everyone who goes or went loves it
very warm weather
friendly people
Seems like like an active student body

Cons:
Very far from home
not as highly respected
town isn't as nice
12% out of state

USC

Pros:
nice college town
nice weather
beautiful campus
30% out of state

Cons:
Concerned with it being too southern?
people seemed less friendly
Could be a big culture shock?

I really need some help choosing! Thanks!!

Seeing as Florida State would be less expensive and has a solid business school (not to mention an FSU business grad was recently hired by Warren Buffett at BH - see: [Warren Buffett: Todd Combs Is ‘a 100% Fit’ With Berkshire Culture - WSJ.com](Warren Buffett: Todd Combs Is 'a 100% Fit' With Berkshire Culture - WSJ) )
your decision should be easy.

UIUC is better than most of these schools. I would even go to UIC. It would be so much cheaper.

By uic you mean university of IL-Chicago?

Chris,

FSU double grad here. BS and MS in acctg. late 80’s after transfering from a CC.

You are right that FSU is far from Chicago. But FSU is respected if you get the job done in class. If you go there to drink, party and play intermurals and end up with a sparkling 2.4 GPA don’t expect ER’s to be impressed.

You can have fun but if you get an FSU business degree you will have an affordable practical education. You will be able to think and problem solve. B-school is B-school. FSU’s is more than respected enough. Don’t believe me? Just ask the 200+ ER’s that line up to interview FSU B-school grads before they even gradudate. Check with the career office. I had job offers before I even graduated. I never had to look up ER’s and call them.

I am sure SoCar and Kansas have similar arrangements for b-school grads. I do not know as much about those schools and while it may be true in Chicago you don’t hear much about FSU I promise you if you go to Atlanta or Mobile or Miami you will.

You listed as a con for FSU that 12% are out of state students. When I was at FSU there were far more. It added to the fun of the place that so many people from cold weather states wanted to come down to FSU and get an education. My roommate was from Cleveland. Tennessee Street is still kicking because FSU is the ultimate southern college town.

That is the thing you stone cold missed. Town isn’t as nice? Compared to Lawrence, KS or Columbia, SC? Have you been to Columbia, SC? Tallahassee FL is a quant southern town that is ruled by the students and the state government. There are lakes and out door things to do, there are street parties before each football game, you will fall in love with Nole baseball, the campus dorms have all been refurbished. There is one bad area of town that I know of, French Town, I went there and didn’t see anything unusual. I lived in Miami after college and everyone warned me. They were right, Liberty City and Overtown are tough, but that is true, sadly, of much of the urban centers in our country.

There is a lot to like about Tally and FSU.

USC has some amazing programs going for it, including Internation Biz and Sports MGMT, USC is a tough school to pass on. Think it over. You have a tough decision to make and if I can answer anything else about my experiences in Tally PM me.

You haven’t written anything about the costs of these schools. Are your parents agreeable to paying the full bill, or do you have to take into account different financial aid packages? If money is an issue, run your numbers here: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid)

Since you are pre-pharmacy, you should pick up the phone and call the pre-pharm advisor on each campus. There may be significant differences in their pharm placement rates.

KU is not that far from Kansas City which is a fun and vibrant town. Lawrence is a very nice college town and milder than Chicago most of the time. The KU business school has its own placement office which is important.
None of the schools has placement that is much better than the others. Average salary is around $44,000 for each and most jobs are in the state or neaby (KC, MO).

Pick the cheapest?

Not the cheapest, the most efficient. :)
