CS 70 is offered this summer!

Good news: for the first time, CS 70 will be offered in the summer, and the instructor is awesome:

http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~aria42/

Just FYI: you should choose CS 70 over Math 55 if you're considering the CS side of EECS, or if you're a L&S CS major (in which case Math 55 is not an option). CS 70 is generally regarded as a better choice because it's taylored towards computer science students.

Testing “bump”. =)

Hmm I’m also taking 61C over the summer. How hard will it be if I take CS 70 as well?

CS 61C is a time-consuming class, but CS 70 is not. CS 61C is a lot of programming, and CS 70 is a lot of theory. For this reason, I think they complement each other well. Beware that taking both could be pretty intense, so you need to manage your time well and stay on top of things. Good luck!

Bump again. Just want more people to take it with me! =)

im transferring into L&S CS major. i already signed up for CS61A. What is so awesome about the instructor? although you may just want more people to take it, do you still recommend someone who is just getting into the major take two technical classes during the summer? thanks in advance for your help.

Well, I don’t know the instructor personally, but he did win the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award this year. Usually only one or two GSIs win it each year.

Depending on your experience with computer science. 61A can be anything from very easy to very hard; so is 70. Generally speaking, people who have strong programming experience tend to find 61A easy, and people who have mathematical maturity handle 70 with no problem. Are you comfortable with your programming and math skills? Are you comfortable with taking at least 3 technical classes in one semester? Can you manage your time well? If you answer yes to these questions, I’d say you will have no problem whatsoever with 61A+70; otherwise you might want to take 61A only.

Hope that helps.

Just for another perspective:

CS70 is by no means easy to those who need a bit of time to think over concepts. It’s by far the most mentally strenuous course I have ever encountered. I’m taking it this semester, and my advise is that you really should evaluate your own ability to grasp concepts and ideas. Some of these topics just won’t click right off the bat for everyone.

Just…be careful. CS70 isn’t easy by any means. It’s really interesting, but it’s not easy.

I think the variance of the time spent studying in CS 70 beats that of every other lower-div CS class, including 61A. I know people who needed only 3 hours on homework each week, and I know people who spent more than 20 hours. Same problems, but depending on whether you understand the concepts and have that extra mathematical insight, CS 70 can give you drastically different experiences.

Thanks for reminding, inconnu. We should be more careful about CS 70 then.

Hey,
SO I just added this class. Who are you in the class Orochi? Since I’m new I’d love a study-buddy to work on the hw with.

bump. reviews? :)
