CS and Graduation Rate

I have been accepted as a CS major for next year.

I know many are scared of Tech's 31% 4-year graduation rate. I assume this low figure is due to the fact that engineering majors (75% of Tech) usually need more than 4 years to complete all course work needed (at a satisfactory level).

My question is regarding the rate of 4-year graduation for CS majors. Is it manageable to graduate in 4-years with a BS in Computer Science, or should I enter expecting to spend a semester or two longer?

I don’t know about CS, but as a ChemE major, it generally takes 5 years to finish your degree and this is due to the strict curriculum we have to follow. Our curriculum will not allow us to take additional courses without passing certain pre-reqs/co-reqs, so it is really hard to finish within 4 years.

If you want to know if the same applies to CS majors, I suggest checking out their curriculum and contact an adviser.

My son is a second year CS major at Tech, he went in with credits from AP classes so he will be finished in 3 years and one semester total. If he had come in with no credits he would be finished in 4 years, so yes it is usually a 4 year degree. If you Co Op that will add time on.

I will agree with eveleigh4 as I know a 1st year CS who had AP credit and Tech’s calculus at her High School. She plans to finish her BS in three years.

3 years? That’s quite interesting.
