CS Major Applying to Purdue, UConn, UMass Amherst, University of Wisconsin Madison

SAT: 1420 (Math 740, R/W 680) (the stupid math section has tricky wording. It doesn’t test ability; it tests how well I can read. stupid test)
Chemistry Subject Test: 800
Math 2 Subject Test: 790
GPA UW: 3.91
Male, 17, Connecticut resident

High reaches for fun:

Rice (free waiver for my chem subject test, I stand 0 chance ik)
Georgia Tech (gotta dream)
NYU (not too high of a reach but I am pretty sure I just wont stand out academically as a male applicant)

Matches:

Purdue
UW Madison
UMass Amherst

Safetyish:

UConn

I really do not think getting in will be an issue since I am instate and my recommendations are from UConn teachers, but what do you guys think? Honestly UConn is the cheapest so if I get accepted I probably am going there.

Extras:

  • first degree black belt in karate. I have traveled across the country (US obvi) to compete and train in Houston, Texas. I taught for years (I was injured recently) as a community service, even sometimes hosting self defense seminars with some of my teachers. It is quite extensive and as been a large portion of my life.

-I work ~20 hours a week for my AP and college classes and also my investments.

-I tutor at my schools teaching center after school 2 days a week (1 hour a day, not much), mostly for math and chemistry xD

-I participated in summer programs at a local university for computer science (~50 hours total) (kinda like a camp but more technical). Went over python, steganography, some hacking concepts, and networking skills. My friend and I took a python library and made a facial recognition software for video files to annoy the head of the week long event; we put the software on one of the computers in the lab with a webcam and set a noise whenever it detected his face in the webcam. Quite fun and we all had a good laugh. Idk why I mentioned this, but it was fun.

-I also participate in a morning program with my schools officer where we work out and practice Judo at ~5:00 in the morning. I actually just started again because my ligament damage healed.

I’m not really familiar with some of your schools, but I think you’re likely for UConn and UMass unless you’re going into a very competitive major. Don’t look for much aid, if any, at UMass though. Good luck!

Not sure exactly how competitive CS is but I’m thinking you are a likely for UCONN. My D is applying for ChemE-and her SAT is a bit higher but you have great subject tests! ( we are also CT). My D took subject tests last weekend for the first time-and doesn’t feel she did great- so she may just send them to Tufts( only school requiring- she just decided to apply as a reach). I think UMASS you will get accepted to also but uconn may be better deal for those in state. Rice is a reach for most but hey I think it’s a great school ( brother in law attended) so it’s worth taking a shot. Best wishes on your journey!
