I'm going to be a sophomore in IOE. I'm trying to decide between doing a minor in CS or Ross. I want to go into a job such as consulting after graduation, not an engineering related one. I have heard a background in CS is valuable in pretty much any field these days so I know a CS minor will help me a lot. However the Ross minor looks pretty prestigious as they only take 100 people a year and the Ross name looks good to employers. Also, if I wanted to go into a management position, I think it would be more valuable than a CS minor. Which minor do you think will help the most?

While CS skills are always valuable, I think for your goals you will have a better time getting the Ross Minor. I think this would expose you to peers who would have similar goals that you have and would be a good network to have come time to prepare for interviews, etc.

Regardless, you should takes EECS 280 as this will improve your programming skills. While 281 is a great class (albeit a time-sink) it’s focus won’t really help you in any situation where you might have to program as a business analyst. In most cases you’ll be working with interpreted or much higher level languages and complexity won’t be an issue.
