CS@William & Mary vs. ECE@Northeastern

Hello everyone

I am an international student applying for a PhD position. I am trying to make a choice between CS@WM and ECE@NEU. Here is some basic information.

As for ECE@NEU, I got the Dean's PhD Fellowship in the first year, with the total amount of stipend of $2,9589. I was requested to accept/decline the offer before March 3.

For CS@WM, the result would be announced at least in next ten days. One professor told me I can be admitted with high possibility, and he will push my materials to the admission committee. The TA/RA is $1,800/month.

So I must make a choice before this weekend, accepting NEU or declining it then waiting for WM. If someone has some information about these two programs, please give some advice on the choice. I really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

NEU is building a new engineering building and focusing on strengthening engineering and CS.

William and Mary is a more prestigious school, because of its strong liberal arts program, not because of the CS program.

I think NEU for ECE would be a wonderful choice.

We attended an open house for CCIS, and were favorably impressed by the growth in their CS program. They have hired so many new professors since 2010.

Check the size of the W&M CS program.

Thanks for your reply!

According to some videos and photos of NEU, it’s a very nice place to pursue graduate studies. I also like Boston very much. I know CS@WM is very small, but most of its graduated PhD students could find good jobs. I can hardly find any information on the future careers of ECE@NEU.

I have visited the campus a few times.
My daughter may attend for CS. She really likes the coop program.

Boston is a great city, and Northeastern has been rising steadily in the rankings.
I don’t know where they are getting all the money to expand buildings, hire professors, and give scholarships, but it is working.
