If anyone is in/knows someone who is in the CS + X joint major program can you tell me what it’s like? Especially if you happen to majoring in CS + English? Some specific questions:
How is the workload? Is it too overwhelming?
Do you have time to take classes in other subjects + participate in extracurricular activities?
I read an article online from Stanford's newspaper about how some current students found the program to be disorganized -- do you feel the same way? (http:// www. stanforddaily.com/2016/05/31/pilot-csx-joint-major-program-concludes-second-year/)
Do you think it's worth it, or would you rather have majored in one of the subjects and majored/minor(ed in the other?
CS+X is a joint major not a double major. You get to complete the requirements in 180 credits (equivalent to 4yrs). It is essential watered down CS and X. The CS requirements are reduced compared to that of the standard CS major. Less CS classes means less work, so the work load for CS+X will be lighter compared to the CS major.
Yes. The program has been a failure. This spring, half way into the 6 year trial period, only 3 of the approx 300 CS graduates of the class of 2017 completed the CS+X program, The program will not be renewed when it comes up for renewal in 2020.
Btw the class 2017 had a record number of CS majors, which is also a record for any major in the history of Stanford. The class of 2019 could see the number balloon to over 400( that’s about 25% of the graduating class).
@CA94309 Wow thanks, that was super helpful! I think I might just apply as a CS major/English minor or vice versa based on your information. Also, just curious, where did you get the statistic about how many people have completed the program?
