I am an incoming transfer student and I was thinking about taking both CS61A and CS61B during my first semester. I have a pretty strong background in CS (worked as a software developer for companies, know several programming languages, and I took similar classes at my CC before transfer). That's why I think that I can pull it off, at least academically wise.

However, CS61B ends at 2PM, that's when CS61A starts (at the same days), plus they are basically at the other end of the campus from each other (Pimentel and Valley LSB). How big of a problem is this? Will the start/end times be exact? How much time do I need from Pimentel to Valley LSB? Does any of you have experiences with a similar situation? I still really want to take both of them... Should I chose other classes?

I thought getting a B- for CS61A is the requirement to get into CS61B. How can you take both? I am a incoming EECS junior. I kinda want to know.

i would try the CS 47 series if i were you, it’s a self-study version of the above classes, so if you already know a majority of the material, it clears up any small problems you have.

Yeah, CS61A is a prereq for CS61B but I was told that they don’t actually check if you fulfilled all the prereqs and thus I thought I’d be able to take both at the same time. I may be wrong though…

Yes, I would rather take the 47 series but I’m not sure how that works.
Don’t they need to evaluate my previous coursework and see it as comparable to CS61A/CS61B? Where, When and how can I petition to take the 47 series instead of 61? I couldn’t find any specific info on the website…

While telebears doesn’t check for pre-reqs, which lets you register as you wish, often the department or instructor will check once class starts, which can result in being dumped from the class abruptly and scrambling for a backup course to replace the units.

To be safe, one should speak with the professor or department and secure their agreement to the waiver of pre-reqs before actually registering.

61A and 61B have little in common

61A is always webcasted, so don’t worry if you arrive a little late

You can easily walk from VLSB to Pimentel in 10 minutes
