I took Kube's CSE 12 last Spring and his class was relatively easy (he posted lecture notes online, which helped me the most--his actual lectures were a bit boring). I was wondering if I should take 100 with Kube this Fall, or wait till Burkhard in the Winter?

I had Kube. It was a lot of work, but I somehow magically got an A- from him. I’ve only heard bad things about Burkhard.

Does Kube have lectur notes for CSE 100?

He posted his lecture slides on his website, yeah.

What have you heard about Burkhard?

I also took CSE 12 with Kube. His exams were easy, but the programming assignments were pretty…difficult I’d say. Just wondering since I’m in the same predicament here.

The usual: his lectures are boring, the homework is hard, the grading is unfair. I can’t really comment since I didn’t have him, but in a department where Gillespie and Kube are considered some of the better professors, I don’t think criticism is not to be taken lightly.

One of my CSE 100 classmates was a tutor for Kube’s CSE 12 and he said the CSE 12 programming assignment about linked list was essentially a modified version of one of his CSE 100 assignments.

If he recycles his stuff then I’m absolutely down to take his course again!

Additionally, how could you leave out Simon or Ord? Kube is a very humble person, but is he truly one of the better ones in the department?

I haven’t had/heard about Simon, but I have heard bad things about Ord (according to one of my friends he can’t teach software engineering). I had him for a C++ class, and despite my best efforts I managed to not learn a single thing, so my opinion of him isn’t super high. I hear he’s pretty good when he teaches compilers though.

My comment about Gillespie and Kube being among the better professors in the CSE dept. was kind of tongue-in-cheek. Kube is smart and all, but his lectures can seriously cure insomnia. But I’ve taken 5 CSE classes (I’m Bioinformatics) and Kube was the guy people complained about the least. Not a big sample size, but I think it’s pretty telling.

Don’t take Burkhard if you can. I have him now and despite his best efforts, teaching is not his thing. It’s time for him to retire.

^ I completely agree.

I have Burkhard right now. I agree that he got very bad teaching style. I barely learn anything during lecture, so if you take his class you are expected to learn by yourself. The discussion is very helpful though. I learned how to do double hashing and brent hashing just a day before the test. Avg for the first midterm was 46/60, and highest score was 59. I got 52 so that is not too bad.

The test is very fair and easy; its almost the same as previous years exam. As for homework, it can be tough if you wait until the last minute and do it. For our first hw, we implemented topological sorting. The second one was double and brent hashing. The homework wasn’t that hard, took probably 8 hours max per homework if you understand the algo.

Beside his teaching style, he is not that bad at all.
