CSS--just curious what this means...

at the end it says:
College(s) below: Will receive answers to the following question codes
DUKE UNIVERSITY- UNDERGRADUATE SQ-525
CORNELL UNIV-ALL UNDERGRADUATE SQ-524 SQ-525 SQ-526

Why do only these two schools want this info? Daughter is applying to 6 that use CSS.

The CSS Profile has a bunch of supplemental questions. Some colleges do not require answers to any of the supplemental questions. The colleges choose which ones they would like answered (can be anywhere from none to all of the supplementals). Duke and Cornell must want additional information that the basic Profile doesn't provide, but which IS included in the supplemental questions. The other schools don't want that info.

I ran into this too.

Start the Profile. Add some schools. Then the supplemental questions are added, specifically for certain schools.

My favorite question: How many cars does your family have? List the make and model of those cars and indicate which one belongs to the student.

Seems pretty darn fair to me. But our family cars are ancient.

purplexed,

I think by asking the ? about the cars, it can tell the school where the family $$ are going. If you have 2 people with same income and vastly different amounts of assets (excluding home equity), and one is driving a older car, vs a new, expensive car, that could impact on the FA you are offered.

I don't have to do profile for my son's school, but I'm hoping my 1991 Honda Civic has a few more years left in it. I just got her inspected and gave her a new battery (because I know the dreaded dead battery was due at any moment!)

Another CSS question that puzzles me (and I noticed that no one else has asked about this yet ...)

Why does the CSS ask which school is the student's first choice? This is part of the supplemental questions at the end, the answers to which don't go to every school. Then they ask for the second and third choice schools. Why?

I agree that the number of cars, make, model and year can impact on financial aid and maybe should. Those of us who are driving older cars that we have paid off should get credit for being frugal, I think.

NotMamaRose:

Can you tell which school is specifically asking that question by the code or numbers before the questions? That one doesn't show up on mine....I guess it's a way a school thinks they can increase yield??

What do I put for question SQ-797, asking me which college I plan to attend?

If only one of the colleges I am applying to (Emory) is going to receive that answer, is it safe to put Emory University? Or would other universities somehow see that answer...

I didn't get the question asking about the make of cars or which college is the first choice. I guess the SQ questions must differ by which colleges you are applying to?!

Yes. If you're not applying to any schools that require a particular question, that question doesn't appear on your CSS form. You only see the supplemental questions that someone wants answered.

Re: the question about which is your first choice college. Yes, I can see which college is requesting it. It just so happens that that particular one is my kid's first choice. But the form then also asks for second and third choice. I am guessing it is mandatory to answer those? And why do they ask? Anyone know?
