I have a bit of problem with financial aid right now. I was recently accepted ED1 to NYU. I applied for financial aid, and I filled out the CSS profile. I do know that there is a Noncustodial Profile. My parents are separated. However, my mother and I do not have any type of contact with my father. We do not know his whereabouts. Since I did not have any information on my father, I thought that I didn’t have to complete the NCP. I also did not know that I had to fill out a NCP waiver request form if this was the case. My problem is that the deadline for the NCP waiver for ED1 request has passed and ever since receiving the acceptance on December 15th, I have not been able to see any financial aid awards or estimates. Will this affect my chances of receiving financial aid?
If you don’t get a waiver…and the non-custodial parent form is required, NYU will hit process your request for institutional need based aid…because your financial aid application materials are incomplete.
You need to contact the school. Ask them what to do.
It is an ED situation, and it is not the school’s responsibility to inform you about the requirements.
See what they say. You may have to decline the ED admission offer.
Gather as much supporting documentation as you can to submit the waiver request. Does your mother have a court order for protection? Does she have any legal paperwork restricting access? Do you have any information on how to contact him (through a relative or employer)?
The school may not accept your information that you just don’t see him. They want to know that it is court ordered, or has been going on a long time, or that there isn’t anything you can do about it. Sometimes there really isn’t anything you can do about it, but other times there is.
All you can do is ask for an extension and submit the waiver. Since NYU doesn’t meet need anyway, it is foolish to apply ED if you need a lot of aid. I think you are going to have to decline the offer. I would advise to rip off the bandaid right away and just do it, since it is extremely unlikely to work out. Every year a good amount of student who apply to NYU and don’t get enough aid come here whining and moaning how it is the only school for them and how can they borrow 200k to go? Every year it is the same. NYU is unaffordable to a great many students. Once you see that you have to move on.
I wouldn’t make any decisions until you’ve talked to the financial aid office. The waiver itself is relatively easy to complete; it will most likely require a statement from you and probably one from your mother. In addition, you’ll most likely need some sort of third party statement, like a school guidance counselor, a clergy, etc. Tax returns can show that child support wasn’t paid. It can be difficult to “prove” that something doesn’t exist and I’m sure some schools want substantive documentation like court orders and such, but I can say that at least some schools do, in fact, take your word for the fact that you have no relationship with the non-custodial parent.
Not true; no one “benefits” from child support on their taxes. The person receiving it does not put it down as income on their taxes and the person paying child support does not get a write-off on their taxes. Child support paid or received however must be reported on the FAFSA an other financial aid documents.
