If a college has a priority deadline for submitting the CSS profile (and they all do), what happens if you submit later? does a day versus a week later make a difference? will i not be allowed to apply for aid at that school if i miss the deadline or does it just decrease the monetary amount?
please explain this, im so confused!! thank you!
Missing a deadline like that is definitely risky unless you plan on only receiving Federal Pell and Federal Direct Stafford Loans, but the actual problem varies from school to school.
What happens sometimes if you miss the priority deadline is that you will be considered last for aid. What the colleges often do is package awards for the people who make the deadline and if there’s any money left over for their institutional aid (which may or may not happen) then they’ll distribute that to the latecomers. Other times, there are multiple deadlines and missing one deadline just means that your aid package will be processed and prepared at a later date, which can be annoying if you’re still deciding between colleges but not fatal. I don’t know if some schools will actually bar you from receiving any aid at all but they can. Honestly, I think the most likely problem that could occur (if any) is that you won’t get all of the aid that you would otherwise qualify for.
To get a firm answer though, you must call the college. There’s not just one policy, it is based on each college’s policy.
Schools have deadlones for a reason. I can’t imagine why folks are asking if it’s OK to submit a day or two late.
Call the school and say “I’m thinking I’ll submit my financial aid application forms a couple of days late. Is that ok?”
See what they say…although personally I think unless you have some VERY compelling reason, the question sounds less that smart.
Plan to submit on time. In fact, plan to submit a couple of days early in case there are computer glitches, or your in into problems.
Schools have deadlines for a reason, and while they may bend a tad…depending on the school as some put late applicants right at the bottom of the pile…you want to submit ON TIME.
It’s a good time to get used to deadlines. When you get to college, many professors deduct grades for assignments not turned in on time…even by an hour.
Is the CSS deadline means it need to be filed by that date on CSS site (e.g. 1/2/15) or the School should get that by the deadline date from College board CSS site. I am sure it take few days to transfer the info from CSS to college FA office.
Hypothetical school A may dispense all aid to students who meet the deadline, leaving students who file later, whether one day or a month, with Direct loans only.
School B * may * administer a small grant or subsidized loan to those who file after the deadline, but unlikely.
Say deadline for aid is March1st.
PROFILE was due November 15th, Fafsa due Feb 15th.
One student filed PROFILE by deadline, Fafsa filed by January 5th.
Another student at same school filed both by deadlines.
Both students had 100% need met, however, the first student had the bulk of financial aid met by a school grant, with small subsidized loans, second students package was reversed, with the bulk being loans and small grant.
