My parents don't speak English, which is why I'm trying to fill this form out basically by myself and hoping that I'm not mistranslating things when I ask my parents.

I've ran into a problem with my mom's financial... whatever the situation is called.

She works for a company that repairs cell phones. She literally sits at her desk and tests things like speakers and making sure all the buttons work and what not.
The problem is with the way they are paying her. She gets checks from them for the hours she works, but she's also making money from the amount of cellphones she works on. For example, she gets paid whatever/hour + ($)(# of phones she works on)

My parents have filled out their taxes, but my mom's income is like split into 2 portions. And there's a sheet titled "Profit or Loss From Business"--Schedule C (Form 1040). I don't even understand how or why the heck she has this form. She clearly does not own a business, and an employer pays her.

I'm getting to this portion in the CSS, and I'm at a loss as to what it is that I'm supposed to tell them about this business that doesn't even exist. Well, it exists but in no way does my mom own anything!

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm clearly way out of my league here. If you guys need anymore information, let me know and I will gladly supply it.

if the company your mom works for gives a 1099-Misc for the per cell-phone part of the compensation then our mom has to file Schedule C. This goes on line 12 of form 1040. Just follow the instructions on CSS Profile and you should be OK

Okay. That makes sense.

So for like all the questions that ask if my mom is self-employed or owns a business, I would just say that she doesnt?

Thank you so much. I am very overwhelmed by all of this.

If she is paid as an independent contractor or temp employee and gets 1099’s rather than W-2’s for any part of her income, then Yes - she is self employed by the tax definition. The self employment income would go on the Schedule C and would get reported as such on the CSS Profile. You can be both a W-2 employee and a contractor, although it’s rare to be with the same company.

What happened was that one question asked about self-employment and the next asked about like how many business she was a part of. I hit yes for self-employment and said 0 for businesses she was involved with. At that point, the CSS would not let me proceed because of the discrepancy.

I went back and changed it to 1, but then the form about the business pops up… when this business was started etc etc etc how much profit/loss blah blh blah

And at that point, I just didn’t know what I was supposed to do.
