Hey all! I am am old-timer here, but I just haven't posted even since I was admitted into UCLA haha (I guess that goes for most people). Anyhow, I graduated already with a BA in Political Science thinking that I wanted to get into law school. Long story short I chose to take a different route and go into Computer Science. I looked into various CS programs and found a local CSU to have something I was interested in. The thing is though this program is NOT impacted and they do not required you submit a GRE score when applying. To many of you here this is a sign that I should stay away. Believe me I am not 100% set on getting into this program, but it is a "last resort" so to speak if I do not get into UC Berk, Stanford or Cal Poly SLO. So would anyone be able to provide some insight on this program? What are the job prospects for MSCS graduates? What about trying to get a job in Silicon Valley afterwards? Any advice is appreciated.

Since your undergraduate degree is a BA in Political Science, I believe it is unlikely that you would be admitted to any Computer Science masters programs in any of the UCs or Stanford and the like.

The reason is that you will have too many undergraduate course deficiencies for CS.

The Cal States might be possible, but they will make you take the necessary undergraduate courses before taking any graduate courses.

Of course, if you have already taken a bunch of undergraduate computer science courses, then the situation could be different.

Yeah, I’ve already took out the UCs as possible places to apply to (minus UC Berkeley), but the CSUs I still have a chance at. Looking at Stanford’s admission requirements though it sounds as though I just need to take their required pre-reqs before applying. Same with UC Berk, which is why I am still considering on applying there. My real question is how “bad” is it to get your Masters in CS from a CSU? Would my chances at applying to the big firms in Silicon Valley be greatly diminished?

why not take a year of pre-reqs thru UC Extension, such as UC Irvine (if you are in The OC). You will then have the background (and hopefully grades) to make a quality app to the top dogs.

Ah well cost is an issue. From what I heard I would be paying tons to take classes at a UC Extension and was recommended to just take classes at a local community college (which is what I am doing now).
