Hello!
So I’m currently a senior in high school and was just accepted to both CU:Denver and CU:Boulder. I was accepted to CU:Denver as a Biology major and CU:Boulder as an Integrative Physiology major.
Which would you say (personally), is a better school (and a better major) for someone trying to get into medical school? Which would offer the better education and possibly better student life?
My goal is to attend medical school in order to become a Physician.
Also, if I were to be rejected from medical school, which would have a better job outcome? (Any personal stories/experiences?)
CU Denver has the Med School, but for undergrad it honestly doesn’t matter where you go as long as you complete all of the prereqs for med school with your major. I am thinking about Med School as well and I think both your majors are good. My friend’s dad is a doctor and he majored in business so as long as you know what you are doing for the MCAT and have a high GPA, they dont look at your major differently. Bio and physiology both make it easy to get all of the prereqs done.
In my opinion CU Boulder most definitely has a better student life. CU Denver has a lot more untraditional students and grad students so it gave me a more “uptight” vibe when I visited and it just didn’t feel as collegy to me. It is also smaller, so it is up to yo if you prefer big or small.
Education wise they are both good schools, my mom went to both and liked both, but she went to CU Denver after grad school so she was a lot older.
The two aren’t even in the same ball park. The University of Colorado, Boulder blows CU Denver out of the water in almost every regard. CU Denver likes to think they are up and coming but the fact is that their students can’t compete intellectually with us. I’m sure applying to Med Schools with Boulder on your resume would provide you a significant advantage.
@NotAmyy CU Denver is a commuter school on the same campus with Denver CC, and Metro, two different colleges which are also commuter schools. U of Colorado Boulder is the flagship campus for biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering and very strong for premedical students. Our CU Medical campus is located in Aurora, and not Denver. So while you would be closer to Aurora if you do choose CU Denver, the classes will be tremendously EASIER there and you may never make it into medical school, but just depends on what you do over the summers and many other factors. Its possible but less likely. You can work summers in Aurora if you go to any school in Colorado, or even out of state students work at our premier Medical school at the Anshutz campus in Aurora. I know U of Rochester premedical students interning summers at CU ANSHUTZ, for instance.
Note that there is a high school credit program where Colorado high schools offer CU DENVER classes at the high school. Note that CU Boulder often rejects those credits as they are not considered college credits by CU Boulder. The two campuses are miles apart in difficulty, although CU Denver has fine teachers who are focused on teaching, the admissions standards are lower at CU Denver than CU Boulder. The number of patents filed is lower at CU Denver than CU Boulder. Anschutz is a different story. Our medical campus is first rate and it includes PhD programs that are medically related, and a dental, nursing and medical program and the only teaching hospitals in the state of Colorado, including Childrens Hospital are all located at Anshutz.
There are some medical related programs at CU Denver though for undergraduates. Visit those programs and understand better what they include , such as any internships at Anshutz.
There is a bus from Boulder to Anshutz campus, by the way, that leaves from the Table Mesa Park and Ride.
There are probably buses between CU Denver and Anshutz Medical campus as well, but check on that. Good luck.
