Cumulative GPA vs Individual Letter Grade

Your individual letter grades matter more than your cumulative GPA. You are better off getting two 90's than 89 and 99, i.e. low A's than a B and a high A. Unless you have international achievement you won't get into any top schools with a C.

Oh, snap.
Any other answers?
I don't want to make a new thread, because the two questions are pretty related.
So, about that hypothetical situation two posts back...?

For very selective colleges, the class rank or percentile is what will be looked at. They will look at your GPA in comparison to others at your school.

In a very strong, competitive school, there can be 30 or more out of 200 accepted to Ivies. At a mediocre school, one would have to be in the top 1-2% to be considered, unless very "well hooked".

For 2008 at Harvard, 95% of freshmen were in the top 10% of their h.s. class.

I'm still in the top 10% of my class, and by no means am I expecting "HYPS." I am aiming for, however, some top 40 schools.
