Do the letter grades themselves matter?

One could have C's and all A's and end up with the same GPA as someone with all B's. Which student would colleges like better?

It depends on the story that the rest of the application tells. They'll probably be intrigued but wary at the A/C kid: is this a budding genius, bored or limited by his surroundings, or just a smart and lazy kid?

If you have all C in one subject area it could raise questions. A few random Bs will have little effect.

Well, it does affect the grade...

More detailed:

Is there a difference (enough to make or break me):

Case 1. B-, B-, B-, B, B+, B+

Case 2. A, A, A, B+, C+, C+

If I'm case 2? I have all A's and A+'s and two C's. If both cases end up having the same UW GPA, is there a difference?

I was wondering, if the chances that I got on "what are my chances" were skewed, because (if there is) a big difference in the two cases above.

keep in mind, not for schools like Ivies or top 10. More like top 30 schools.

anyone?....

My problem
One CLASS- therefore only 1/6 of my gpa anyway but. . .
A-,F,A,A,A-,A+ = B+ final average for the course I think

Is that going to kill me?

Wait make that a D instead of an F- isn't D 65?
Yeah I had one REALLY bad quarter- all because of one lame late paper. I'm sorry .

Well- see if your transcript shows final averages or every quarter. If the former is true, you just have a lower gPa but I think no one sees the quarters by themselves.

UNLESS these scores you are giving me are the final grades for each course, which even if my suggestion is true, they would see.

Where are those Case B grades from?- this quarter, all quarters for one course, or finals of all courses? Sorry if you mentioned this or I am misunderstanding, but I am slightly confused.

Basically what i'm asking is, for a semester grade (only thingt that shows on transcript), does it matter what you got letter grade wise?

Like if someone took 5 classes and got all B's and ended up with a 3.5,
vs. someone who took 5 classes and got all A's and a few C+'s with a 3.5?

I'm asking because I posted my chances on the chances forum, but I didn't list individual letter grades. I listed my GPA as a 3.4 overall and people told me michigan is a high match/reach. Would that change if they found out that I got C's junior year? Like, would michigan become a major reach for me with the same GPA, but with C's?

a C doesn't matter, but a D or F is a different story i believe

Bottom line, neither would get into top colleges. That aside, all B's look better for the schools taking 3.0 applicants.

When we say that a few Bs don't matter (and I'm assuming we're talking about top schools), does that also mean that a student getting all As except for very few (ie 3 total) B+s won't be hurt by those B+s?
