In terms of a college admissions officer's perspective, which is more important and carries more weight?

I got a C in Euro (bah), but still retain a 3.75. Will they pay more attention to my C, or to my fairly decent GPA and the fact that in general, I'm a fairly decent student.

Ha your case is a lot similar to mine. I have a couple C's and still have a 3.7 and i still consider myself a "fairly decent student", so i think you're gonna be fine, especially if its only one C. just focus on ec and test scores.

I'm no expert but I'm thinking that class rank would also have something to do with it. If getting C's put you at a 3.7 and dropped your class rank drastically, then I think it would probably be a big deal.

If you're still at the top 5% or so of your class, and that's your only C, you should be fine.

Hopefully not! Take solace in the fact that someone's worse off than you.. like me haha. I've gotten D's and C's but still have an 3.6 so it's all good IMO. Don't sweat it. :)

I acknowledge the fact that there are those worse off than me, and am grateful for the academic success that I've had already, but what bothers me most is that I'm always on the cusp, and certainly the fact that this C could tip me toward the unfavorable direction.

I'd assume (and obviously I'm no expert) that colleges would see the one C, but they would pay significantly more attention to your overall GPA.

i'd say, just chill and if you need to, you can explain if any other circumstances affected the fall. your cumulative is great, and i don't think 1 C will ruin you.

Ler me try to answer this as best I can. I'm in the exact same situation that you are in, so I have done some extensive research on the subject and this is what I've found.

If you have gotten C's (or even b's), but you still have a high cumulative GPA (I have 3.8, got 4 C's) you may still have a good chance of getting into the hardest colleges. What adcoms will look at when they see your lower grades is the date that you got them. If you earned all of your C's when you were in 8th grade/freshman, but have had nothing but straight A's scince, they will notice and think that you have been maturing and changed your life around. This can actually be stronger when combined with a good essay than having what seems like parent forced straight A's all through school.

What can really hurt you though is a set of C's or lower grades towards the end of your high school years. This might show the adcoms that you're burning out, and that you can't handle the rigors of college-level courses.

Okay, take this hypothetical:
What if a person got 3 Bs Freshman, 2 Bs 1 C Sophomore, and then straight As Junior year (without dropping any APs or Honors courses except for math- from Calc B/C to Pre Calc/A.)
How does that look? Assuming with a killer essay.
